Summer Literacy Institute 2014

The Summer Literacy Institute began as a professional development opportunity for San Jacinto College full- and part-time faculty as the College Preparatory Department transitioned from teaching reading and writing separately to fully integrating the disciplines in Fall 2012. At that time, we ceased to offer stand-alone reading and writing and offered two levels of integrated reading and writing. Texas State University’s Dr. Eric Paulson, Associate Dean of the Graduate College, and Dr. Emily Payne, Director of the Education Institute facilitated the training that year, introducing many of the faculty to methods  for integrating reading and writing.

Last year, our growth continued as reading and writing faculty across Texas joined us in further investigating best practices in teaching integrated reading and writing. Dr. Sugie Goen-Salter, English Department Chair at San Francisco State University, held a collaborative two-day seminar on integrated reading and writing, in which she demonstrated the impossibility of reading and writing ever existing in isolation of each other.

This year, with the addition of House Bill 5, San Jacinto College saw the need to expand the format of the Summer Literacy Institute and develop a meaningful program for teachers in both K12 and community colleges. Together, we hope to engage in rich conversations and collaboration for the good of our students. We look forward to doing that with you!
