CANstruction Competition raises TONS for campus food pantries

‘Tis the season of giving, and this year 16 teams from across the College joined in the CANstruction competition in an effort to collect canned food items for the Central, North and South Campus food pantries. Each team held canned food drives in order to supplement their construction materials. In collaboration with the College’s veteran centers, each team was tasked with creating a structural piece of art with a military/veteran theme using the canned and dried food items donated, with all items being donated directly to the campus food pantries. The finished products were truly a sight to see! In total, the CANstruction teams raised 4,592 pounds of food for the campus food pantries. Congratulations to the team winners, and an overall THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the event and/or donated to this amazing cause. Check out some photos of these creative structures, and see more photos here.

    Remembering 9/11

All of the campus’ Remembering 9/11 events were a great success thanks to the College’s Veteran Services and Student Engagement & Activities departments. The Pasadena American Legion Post 521 and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 521 provided six $100 scholarships to two student veterans at the Central, North and South Campuses.

On Monday, September 11, 2017, AL Post 521 Commander Hubert Winters, ALA Unit 521 President Diana King, and ALA District 22 President Carol Chance Fleury made presentations on each campus at their respective Remembering 9/11 events.

The two Central Campus winners of the AL and ALA $100 scholarships are Arturo Guerra and Victor DeLeon.  Arturo Guerra is a Communications major and a US Navy veteran. Victor DeLeon, an Army veteran, is a culinary arts major.

Houston Green, one of the recipients of the $100 scholarship, is a mechanical engineer major and an Air Force veteran. The other recipient at South Campus is Katrina Parker-Hall; she is a nursing major and a Navy veteran.

The life and leadership of U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Harold Gregory “Hal” Moore will be presented by Army veteran, military historian, San Jacinto College history professor and internationally-recognized author Mike Guardia on Wednesday, April 12.

Sponsored by the San Jacinto College chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success and the San Jacinto College Centers of Excellence for Veteran Student Success, Guardia’s presentation “Hal Moore: Lessons in Leadership” will present a rare and interesting look at Moore’s heroic leadership principles that saved the lives of most of his outnumbered battalion in one of the earliest battles of the Vietnam War in 1965. Military Appreciation Days at South Campus

South Campus recently hosted Military Appreciation events with honored guest and military historian, Capt. Paul De Gaeta. On April 27, Capt. De Gaeta gave a lecture entitled, “History Makers, Lost and Found,” in which he discussed some of the more famous servicemen and women he has had the honor of interviewing. To date, he has collected more than 300 veterans’ histories that range from WWI to the Gulf War. On April 28, a panel of various College staff and administrators discussed ideas and ways the veteran centers an expand their scope, become recognized at a regional level, and how to reach out and attract more veteran students to San Jacinto College because of the services and support we provide. Veteran students also had a chance to speak and give suggestions of what they would like to see added to and improved on with the veteran centers. It was a very great discussion with lots of information and suggestions made on all sides.

    Support our student veterans

Dear Friends of San Jacinto College,

Our veterans have given themselves in service for our freedom. For the last year, San Jacinto College and its partners have been creating a fund to build Centers of Excellence for Veteran Student Success on each campus to give back to these warriors.   With a total project cost of $600,000, the SJC community, architects, contractors, and vendors have supplied nearly $300,000 worth of labor, materials, and facility space.  At this point, we are half way to our goal.

    Now, we need your help!

    Please remember our veterans.

You can view a rendering of the Centers of Excellence for Veteran Student Success at:

Visit the San Jacinto College Foundation website at sanjacfoundation.org to find out how you can help support our student veterans.

*Note:   To honor your veteran on our Wall of Honor include name(s) in the comment section with your gift.
Payroll deduction is available for SJC employees.
