Fowler retires after 41 years of dedicated service

James Fowler, who plays dulcimer as a hobby, will retire from San Jacinto College after 41 years of service as a faculty member and administrator.

James Fowler, who has served San Jacinto College since 1968 as a dedicated instructor and administrator, is retiring in August.

Fowler taught biology for 17 years at the Central campus, and then moved to the district office as the College district’s benefits coordinator. He then became the district’s personnel/benefits director, a title that was later changed to vice chancellor of human resources.

Fowler was raised on a farm in New Waverly, and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Sam Houston State University. Mr. Fowler and his wife Jacquelyn are longtime residents of Deer Park. They have two adult children (Greg and Jeff) and four grandchildren, (Berkley, Caylie, Chase, and Camrhen) ranging from 3 to 14 years old.

Fowler reflects fondly on a rewarding career with an institution that has maintained that special ability to be large enough to serve the community, and yet small enough to care. “Faculty in particular have more time to get to know students and offer guidance for career paths,” he remarked. “San Jacinto College is a great place to work, and employees care about each other, and are involved in community activities.”

Known for his wit and sense of humor, Fowler tries to live by a simple philosophy. “I have always believed the same tasks can be accomplished with a positive attitude and a sense of humor.”
He also has a simple plans for retirement: “Spend more time relaxing and traveling with my wife, playing with my grandchildren, completing projects at home.”

Happy retirement, Mr. Fowler. Your San Jac family will greatly miss you!
