    South Campus hosting social networking happy hour 

    A Social Networking Happy Hour will be held Feb. 17 from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Kaleidoscope Room (101), located in the ILC at the South Campus.

    Come and get tips on navigating the professional social scene.

    Hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served. Professional dress is encouraged.

    Photography Club meeting set for Sept. 19 

    A meeting of the San Jacinto College Employees Photography Club will be held on Friday, Sept. 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

    The meeting location is at the Central Campus — C.2-117, which is the West Classroom of the main administration building, room 117.

    Bring a light lunch, and (if you like) your camera gear, and be prepared to glean valuable info about photography.

    The facilitator will be Rob Vanya, communications coordinator and longtime photographer.

    The SJC Employees Photography Club is open to all employees, and relatives. Registration is not required, and there are no membership fees.

    Dr. Dabney to serve on state professional development committee

    Dr. Valschkia Dabney

    Dr. Valschkia Dabney, San Jacinto College’s director of training and professional development, has been selected to serve on the Texas Community College Teachers Association (TCCTA) professional development committee.

    In her role, she will help to plan and facilitate professional development conferences for community college administrators, faculty and staff who are TCCTA members. The professional development committee will also work closely with the TCCTA executive committee to conduct research to support opportunities that elevate the status of two-year and technical college educators.

    “I am excited about working with the TCCTA to leverage its existing strengths toward an even brighter future for community colleges,” commented Dabney, who works in San Jacinto College’s educational technology department. “I look forward to working with fellow committee members to bring quality, timely and useful professional development opportunities to administrators, faculty, and staff.”

    Dabney earned an associate degree in social science from San Jacinto College. She holds a master’s in business administration from the University of Phoenix-Houston Northwest Campus, and a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Texas.

    Before coming to San Jacinto College, Dabney taught English, business technology, and developmental writing at Lone Star College. She also taught English, math, and science at Klein ISD. In the field of college educational technology, she has served on numerous committees and boards to improve academic and workforce education programs for two-year college students. She has also served key roles in securing grants to help fund important college preparatory programs.

    Kudos to Dr. McWaine 

    Dr. Lamar McWaine participated in the Leadership and Mentoring Institute sponsored by the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education. The conference was held recently at Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. McWaine was the only community college educator selected from a nationwide pool of applicants.

    Shown in the photo with Dr. McWaine are AABHE President Dr. Barbara Lofton (left), and Dr. Barbara Johnson, director of the Leadership and Mentoring Institute.

    Dr. McWaine has served for many years as the North Campus’ Student Life Coordinator, and is in the process of transitioning to his new position as a full-time professor of Learning Frameworks courses at the North Campus.

    Kudos to Dr. McWaine, and keep up the good work.

    North employees perk up at Espresso meeting 

    Chef Tim Banks and Sandra Curry at the Staff Espresso meeting.

    North campus employee Sandra Curry recently coordinated the monthly Staff Espresso meeting, held in the Chablis dining room. The regular professional development meetings provide employees networking opportunities.

    The guest speaker for the meeting was Tim Banks, a culinary arts instructor at the North campus. Employees enjoyed tasty treats prepared by culinary arts students, while Mr. Banks discussed the history and different types of chocolate. Chef Banks also provided a taste-testing session with three types of coffee (light, medium, and dark) and discussed the history and caffeine content in each type.

    Each of the three campuses has a designated Staff Espresso coordinator, who selects speakers and topics for each month’s meeting.
