South Campus’ Hispanic Heritage Month Panel

The San Jacinto College South Campus’ annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration luncheon was at full capacity for this year’s theme, “Shaping the Bright Future of America.” Three South Campus Latino/a professors, Dr. B.K. Silva, government professor; Mr. Juan Martinez, Spanish, French and humanities professor; and Ms. Cristina Doda Cárdenas, speech professor, served as the panelists and discussed where they and their families are originally from, how their Latino heritage assisted them as they earned their higher education degrees, and shared their words of wisdom for those attending.

The panelists’ most important messages included encouraging self-discovery by trying something new, reaching out to those that are different from you, pride in your heritage, and the urge to complete a higher education degree.  Attendees enjoyed a wonderful, diverse meal prepared and served by the San Jacinto College North Campus culinary arts department under the supervision of Chefs Timothy Banks and Sharayah Brunson. The meal featured various Latino dishes including pollo mole Maria (chicken mole), pupusas Salvadorenos (Salvadorean pupusas), platanos maduros (fried plantains), arroz Mejicano (Mexican rice), enchiladas de queso (cheese enchiladas), cochinita pibil (pork roast in banana leaf) and tlayuda (tortilla with carrot salsa). Dessert included empanadas de calabasa (pumpkin empanadas), galletas de dulce de leche (caramel cookies) and conchas pan dulces (Mexican sweet bread). A special thanks to Ms. Tonja Conerly, Daniel Byars, Samantha De la Rosa and Esther Rentas for all their efforts that made the event a HUGE success.
