Facilities Services NFPA 2018 lock project

Facilities Services will be managing the replacement and upgrade of classroom and conference door hardware across the College.  These types of hardware solutions vary to some degree.  In recent weeks the planning and procurement for this project has been underway.  This week, Facilities Services plans to begin the installation of upgraded locking solutions.  This effort is expected to continue through the end of August.  There could be minor impact to instructional activities as personnel work to complete this project.

Thank you in advance for your patience, and apologies for any inconvenience this might present.

Collaborative annual landscaping project with Facilities Services and Central botany class

The Facilities Services department and the Central Campus botany class recently completed their semester landscaping project at the front entrance and parking lot of the Central Campus music building #5.  In collaboration with Mr. Jeff Tschappatt, the District Grounds Supervisor, his grounds crew and Professor Barbara Schumacher, a campus planting has been incorporated into the semester syllabus for more than 10 years.  Learning about specific plant selections, their characteristics and placement in horticulture design under the guidance of Mr. Tschappatt always enhances the student’s botanical experience.

This semester, two entrance beds were planted with a colorful, cold-hardy variety of “Sunshine Ligustrum” (Ligustrum sinense) and the popular “Chinese fringe flower” (Loropetalum sp.) shrubbery.  Smaller cover plants of society garlic and African Iris filled in six more parking lot beds to beautify the area.

As part of this project students were able to:  calculate bed dimensions, draw beds to scale, analyze soil samples for type and nutrient content, place and plant over 100 plants and finish all beds with a mulch covering.

This partnership with Facilities Services allows for an improved student learning outcome,  providing Facilities Services a direct avenue to interact with San Jacinto College students, impacting their education in a positive manner and improving campus appearance.  We are grateful for this annual collaborative opportunity.
