The North Campus recently hosted a Fall Fest at Channelview High School that turned out to be a great success, attracting hundreds of Channelview students of all ages, as well as many parents and little children.
Employees representing most North Campus academic and technical programs were on hand to greet visitors and hand out information about their programs. Players from the baseball team and the women’s basketball team mingled with visitors, and cosmetology students provided free face painting.
The music department provided live jazz music, the culinary arts program provided free hot dogs, and the mental health program coordinated a free cakewalk. Mr. Barrett provided a snapshot of how the small settlement grew from a cluster of seven houses into a stable, thriving community.
Singing was performed by special guest DuWayne Davis, who sang two inspirational Gospel songs. Live music was also performed by the Texas Southern University Jazz Ensemble, and the San Jacinto College employee choir.
Those attending the event enjoyed a soul food lunch featuring fried chicken and catfish, black-eyed peas, mustard greens, mac & cheese, and cornbread. The meal was prepared by the culinary arts department, under the direction of Donna Jones.

There was a large turnout at the recent grand opening of the new North Campus Welcome Center, which began operations at the start of the Spring semester.
The facility provides a convenient “one-stop shop” for student services such as testing and assessment, educational planning and counseling, career and employment assistance, First Year Experience programs, disability services, enrollment services, business office, and financial aid assistance. In addition, the campus president, vice president of learning, dean of student development, and dean of enrollment services are housed at the Welcome Center.
With a centralized location for important services, students can now complete their admission application, apply for financial aid, take placement tests, meet with educational planners, receive career guidance, participate in first year experience programs, and make payments all in one convenient location.
“This is an important step to helping our students succeed,” commented Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer. “It’s projects like this that will enable San Jacinto College to continue to serve our community’s educational and workforce training needs. This building is a vital tool to help us better assist and prepare our students.”
