Dr. Williamson earns prestigious leadership award

Dr. Brenda Hellyer congratulated Dr. Laurel Williamson at a recent Board of Trustees meeting.

Dr. Brenda Hellyer congratulated Dr. Laurel Williamson at a recent Board of Trustees meeting.

Dr. Laurel Williamson recently won the Carl M. Nelson Administrative Leadership Award, which is presented by the Texas Association of Community Colleges to recognize outstanding leadership qualities.

News of the prestigious award came as a complete surprise to Williamson, the College’s deputy chancellor and president. “I was speechless,” she commented. “I felt honored, humbled, and extremely grateful for this show of confidence.”

Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer, who collaborates regularly with Dr. Williamson on many key initiatives and projects, was not at all surprised that Williamson won the state award. “Dr. Williamson works every day with integrity and excellence, while being a catalyst for collaboration,” Hellyer remarked. “She embodies not only the San Jacinto College values but the type of leadership that is needed at all higher education institutions.”

Congratulations to Dr. Williamson on the well-deserved recognition.

Dr. Williamson has earned numerous national awards through the years for innovation, collaboration, and leadership. Significant recognitions include the National Association for Developmental Education’s Outstanding Administrative Support for Developmental Education Award, the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Excellence Award (2004 and 2009), the Outstanding First Year Student Advocate Award, and the Instructional Leadership Award.

The Nelson leadership award was established in memory of Carl M. Nelson, former president of Texarkana College who helped many as they assumed leadership positions in community colleges. The Nelson award selection committee includes Gretchen Schmidt, Jobs for the Future post secondary state policy team program director; Mark Kavanaugh, Texas Senate Higher Education Committee; and Justin Yancy, Texas Business Leadership Council executive director.

Wow! Excellent! It took her by surprise because we’ve been keeping her so busy. Hope she has a chance to take time to relish this award with a mani/pedi at one of our Cosmetology departments. 🙂
