    North Shore Rotary supports San Jacinto College 

    NS Rotary Donation July 2014The North Shore Rotary Club Foundation recently presented $25,000 to the San Jacinto College Foundation to set up an endowed scholarship, with plans to add to the endowment in the future. Those attending the check presentation include, from left, North Campus Provost and North Shore Rotarian Dr. Bill Raffetto; San Jacinto College Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer; Dr. Allatia Harris, San Jacinto College Vice Chancellor of Strategic Initiatives and North Shore Rotary Club President; Ruth Keenan, San Jacinto College Foundation Executive Director; San Jacinto College Board Chair and North Shore Rotarian Dan Mims; and Kevin Morris, South Campus Dean of Business and Technology and North Shore Rotarian.

    North Campus salutes military veterans 

    The North Campus Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success coordinated a ceremony to salute military veterans on Veterans Day, which was held at the entrance of the Welcome Center.

    The event kicked off when members of the American Legion Riders rolled in on motorcycles, and members of the North Campus Student Veterans Association raised the American flag. The invocation was delivered by Mike Edwards, SVA member.

    Interim North Campus Provost Dr. Bill Raffetto welcomed visitors, acknowledged military veterans in attendance, and other special guests. SVA member read an inspirational and stirring essay called “What is a Veteran?”

    SVA members Gary Alston and Silvia Escobedo were presented scholarships by Ruth Keenan, executive director of the San Jacinto College Foundation.

    The closing benediction was delivered by SVA member Andrew Jones. The ceremony was followed by refreshments and a networking session with military personnel.

    Kudos to the Veterans Day Committee for coordinating the salute to military veterans – Melanie Neill, Donna Baker, Deanna Clark, Jo Eggebrecht, Erin Lewis, and Andrea Mitchen.

    Student wins Money Week scholarship 

    Money Week

    Congratulations to San Jacinto College student Maura Sorrentino, who was recently selected at random as winner of the 2013 Houston Money Week College Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

    Maura entered the contest as a student in a recent Houston Money Week workshop coordinated by North Campus professor Dr. DeRhonda McWaine. Maura is shown in the related photo (center) with Kelly Keith, Women’s Resource of Greater Houston program manager (at left), and with Dr. McWaine.

    The Women’s Resource of Greater Houston partners with  Houston Money Week by offering free financial literacy classes.

    The scholarship will greatly help Maura. “It motivates me to continue my education,” she said. “It will help financially with books and I’m using the funds to pay for my classes.”

    Kudos to Kelly Keith (who also is a former San Jacinto College employee), and to Dr. McWaine for helping students to reach their goals.

    Engineering firm supports students 

    S&B Engineers and Constructors recently donated funds to support scholarships for San Jacinto College students majoring in Engineering Design Graphics. Central Campus students receiving a $1,000 scholarship through the contributions include, (front row) from left, Thomas Gevardo, Micaela Cornett, Derek Chachere, and Jacqueline Ellis. The scholarships are administered through the San Jacinto College Foundation. Shown supporting the students (back row) are Michael Fox, EDG professor for the College; Dr. William Brookshire, S&B chairman; and Ruth Keenan, SJC’s executive director for development.

    SJC Foundation Golf Tournament ball drop winner! 

    Judy Hendley, North Campus department chair for consumer services was the winner of the ball drop at this year’s SJC Foundation Golf Tournament. Hendley has been with the College for 30 years, and this year was the first time she decided to play in the ball drop. “The foundation made it very easy to purchase the tickets with the automatic payroll deduction,” said Hendley. “It is a  great fund raiser for student scholarships, so either way I knew it was for a great cause.” Hendley was presented with her check of $2,535 from Foundation executive director for advancement, Ruth Keenan.

    Lucky winner 

    Jennifer Ramsey, an information system trainer at the Central campus, was the lucky winner of the “Ball Drop” contest that was part of the recent Foundation Golf Tournament.  As the winner, Jennifer received a check for $3,005. The golf tournament and events related to the tournament raised funds to support student scholarships and other educational initiatives. Ruth Keenan, interim vice president of resource development, presented the check to Jennifer (shown at left in related photo).

    Chemical association awards 4 scholarships 

    Shown at the Houston Chemical Association scholarship presentation are from left (front row): Ruben Ramirez, San Jacinto College science lab supervisor; SJC students Roy Williams, Bruce Livingston, Sergio Ortuno, and Eliazar Nava; (back row): Jerry Schweiger, HCA scholarship committee chair; David Fortune, HCA vice president; and SJC chemistry professors Joyce Miller and Bennie Jenkins.

    Kudos to Susan Arscott, the College’s vice president of resource development, for working with the Houston Chemical Association (HCA) to arrange for student scholarships. HCA recently awarded scholarships to four San Jacinto College students who are majoring in chemistry — Roy Williams, Bruce Livingston, Sergio Ortuno, and Eliazar Nava.     Foundation Golf Tournament auction a great success 

    AuctS4This year’s Foundation Golf Tournament auction was a great success, thanks to the help of many dedicated San Jacinto College employees. Leonard Pringle, Central campus culinary arts department chair, and Central campus culinary arts students treated visitors to a cornucopia of delicious appetizers and finger food.

    Leonard is shown with Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer, who welcomed visitors to the auction and introduced speakers during the presentation.

    Others who provided valuable assistance for the auction include Susan Arscott, Nancy Thacker, Hollie Fulsom, Hannah McCue, Nicole Darland Haas, Martha Van Buskirk, and Ginger Lambert.
