Congratulations Nate Wiggins, IEEE Best Presenter Award

Nate Wiggins, professor of mathematics and engineering at San Jacinto College North Campus, was recently recognized with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Best Presenter Award for his presentation in the virtual reality and artificial intelligence category at the IEEE Computing and Communication Workshop and Conference at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Wiggins presented a mixed reality homework system which creates holographic lessons for about 10 percent of the current cost, with no cost to the student, while providing artificial intelligence for automated feedback and remediation. Wiggins has been working on the research for a few years which was spurred from another project he was working on. He also uses his own homework system that he created for his classes, which he says has been working very well. Congratulations on your award, Nate!

Trailblazer Dr. Gilmore earns ’40 Under 40′ award

Congratulations to Dr. LaToya Gilmore for earning a “40 Under 40” award from Prairie View A&M University based on her accomplishments as an emerging leader who has blazed a trail in her field.

“I had an amazing experience as an undergraduate at Prairie View and I use it to enhance, nurture, and inspire those I encounter,” Dr. Gilmore commented.

Prairie View’s 40 under 40 award recognizes 40 alumni under the age of 40 who use their experience at Prairie View to impact communities. “Our motto is ‘Prairie View Produces Productive People’ and being in this inaugural class is a tremendous honor,” Dr. Gilmore said.

Dr. Gilmore has indeed blazed a trail in her field. She earned a bachelor’s degree in less than four years from Prairie View, transferred to Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California where she earned a master’s of science in marriage and family therapy. While studying at Fuller, she participated in mission work in Africa along with six other female graduate students. The students assisted communities and visited schools throughout Uganda.

After graduating from Fuller, she worked as a family therapist in Compton, California for a non-profit organization prior to moving to Houston. Through other non-profit organizations, she provided in-home therapeutic services and education in communities around the city of Houston, including Sunnyside, Alief, Fifth Ward, Baytown, and Pasadena before beginning her teaching tenure at San Jacinto College.

She has also presented and facilitated programs at professional conferences across the state of Texas. During her doctoral studies at Texas Southern University, she was a member of Chi Sigma Iota Honor Society, later graduating magna cum laude.

In addition to teaching Learning Framework at the North Campus, she serves as a mentor and faculty advisor.

Dr. Gilmore holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Prairie View, a master’s in marriage and family therapy from Fuller, and a doctor of education in counselor education from TSU.

English profs enjoy a ‘storybook’ wedding

Barbara Brown, Central Campus English department chair, provides the following account of a recent interesting event —

“I don’t think this has ever happened in the history of the Central Campus English Department — two of our full-time English professors have gotten married. Julie Groesch joined the department in 2010, and Robb Flynn joined the department in 2012. Their wedding was May 28.

There are 3 related photos.  One is from the May 6 shower the Central English Department threw for them, and the other two are from the wedding reception.  As only English profs would do, they had their wedding caked designed to represent their favorite novels.”

Congratulations to the newlyweds, and good luck with their “storybook” wedding, and may they live happily ever after !!!
