    Second Annual Fine Arts Expo

The Second Annual Fine Arts Expo was held Thursday, March 28 at the San Jacinto College North Campus. The campus welcomed 1,500 attendees, including parents, students, and volunteers.

The Fine Arts Expo is a joint partnership of San Jacinto College and Communities In Schools Texas Joint Venture for local ISD students to perform; showcase their art; and, experience artwork and concerts by San Jacinto College students.

“The underlying thread through all of this, is to get children and their families on a San Jac campus for a positive experience,” said Randy Snyder, department chair of fine arts, speech and education. “The intent is for children to see that college is possible and leave with the belief that college is a place of learning, fun, and enriching experiences.”

The event includes simultaneous concerts/activities taking place every twenty minutes in several venues, which creates a carnival feel. There are three concert venues, two activity venues, and the Galleria del Norte exhibiting student artwork.

As each student entered the building, their parents/guardians register and the child received an ARTS EXPO bag with goodies (SJC brochures and the like). The evening culminates with a closing ceremony that includes a drawing for prizes.

Special thanks to the San Jacinto College performing arts groups:

    Read Across North Campus

The San Jacinto College North Campus held their fourth annual Read Across North Campus event, handing out books to students free of charge.

“I can’t thank you enough for your generosity,” said Dr. Bill Raffeto, provost, San Jacinto College North. “The students were once again amazed that we were giving away books for free. Some were a little shy at first, but quickly warmed to the task.”

This year, over 1,200 books were given to students. Also, age appropriate books were taken to the North Campus Lab School, where each child at the center received a free book.

Since it’s inception in 2016, over 4,800 books all donated by employees, have been given to students.

Dr. Raffetto started the program to promote life-long reading to students. He says he is overwhelmed at the generosity of faculty and staff who donate their used books.

“I want to thank each of you who donated books, help transport them to the event, and manned the tables,” Dr. Raffetto said. “Your team work is appreciated.”

Special thanks to Jeanette Liberty’s Mom who mailed boxes of books from Florida.

Dr. Raffetto also encourages employees to start saving books for next year.

“Creating a love for reading in our students as life-long readers is part of what we do,” Dr. Raffetto said. “I am proud of them and I am proud of you.”
