Our deepest sympathies go to Eugene Bernard and Nioshah Hall on the recent passing of their grandmother, Ruthie Mae (Lewis) Bernard.

The sun rose in Leona, Texas on November 17, 1937 bringing with it a new day and new life. Ruthie Mae Lewis was born to Dan and Ruth Lewis and moved to La Porte, Texas at the age of 13. She accepted Jesus Christ at a young age and joined Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church where she served for over 60 years. She was an active member in the choir and would later become the president of Mission #2.

Ruthie later attended George Carver High School in Baytown, Texas and would later meet Army soldier, Ephraim Bernard. Ruthie and Ephraim were married in December of 1952 and brought forth 7 children; Alterberry, Marilyn, Belinda, Audrey, Ephraim Jr., Jacqueline, and Michelle.

Ruthie Mae lived a full life! She was frequently looked upon as the “roots” of the family. Unmoved, steadfast, and bold, she stood on her truth and the word of God and became a mother figure to all. Her home became one of the hubs of the community early on, where people from all walks of life, ages, and ethnicities would come to sit on “Momma’s” porch.

Ruthie’s immediate family would joke with her, saying, “she has a song for every pressing matter” as she would break into song at any given moment to help ease any problem you faced.

Ruthie loved telling the history of her family and sharing her journey on how she became who she was as a person. Her grandchildren crowned her with helping to shape their characters and taught them how to stand when the world is falling down around them.

On Friday, October 19, 2018, Ruthie departed this earthly life and was called home at the age of 80 years old.

She was preceded in death by husband of 50 years, Ephraim Bernard, her mother and father, Ruth and Dan; 9 siblings; grandchild Traville and great-grandchild Paris.

To cherish her memory she leaves her 2 siblings, Ida Mae Weaver and Arthur Lewis. 7 children, Alterberry Bernard (Cheryl), Marilyn Edwards, Belinda Lee (Bobby), Audrey Sabree, Ephraim Bernard Jr. (LaTosha), Jacqueline Bernard, Angela Michelle Golden (Nathan).

Grandchildren: Alterberry Jr, Ammie (Roosevelt), Demetrious (Jontaine), Shawnitra, Cenica (Shavon), Comatrice, DeShawn, LaQuansha (Eric), Bobby Jr (LaToya), Ruthsheta, Elijaiah, Eugene (Jessica), Nioshah, Ariel, Layton, Katrina, Vivian, Ephraim III, and Tayveon.

29 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and many others that called her Mom.

Funeral Services were held, Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018.

Eugene is the Manager, Veteran Services and Nioshah is the Records Specialist, Student Records Management.
