Adventures in STEM – MindTrekkers 2018 – SJC “Volunteers” Needed!

It is that time.  San Jacinto College is hosting Mind Trekkers’ Adventures in STEM for area 6th graders on Central Campus March 8th and 9th.  Once again, we are asking for your assistance. We are looking for employees who are available to participate as we make this a fun, safe two-day event for 4500 students. Your response has been great in the past, and I look for you to step up again in the same San Jac Proud way you helped out last year.

Mind Trekkers is a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) festival. The Dow Chemical Company is a major sponsor, along with Chevron Phillips, LyondellBasell, INEOS, Austin Industries and more. Three years ago, Dow invited San Jac to host this event for the Houston region. Engineering students from Michigan Technical University, supplemented by San Jac faculty and students, and representatives from some of our industry partners, led about 100 different short experiments for visiting 6th graders and area families. You can check out a video of San Jac’s 2017 Adventures in STEM Mind Trekkers event by clicking on this linkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b3KfsAm6sI.

Our goal is to encourage students to “Get Their Geek On” and have fun with science. We want more students to choose STEM as a pathway in their studies.

This year, San Jac is hosting the event, and our San Jac volunteers will take center stage. Michigan Tech is sending a couple of folks to assist, but the entire festival will be ours to operate. So your help is more critical than ever to make this an event that serves our community well.

So – what do we need? We need employees who are willing (with supervisor approval) to help us make these events happen on either Thursday March 8th and/ or Friday March 9th  from 8:00 – 3:00 at Central Campus. We also need people on Thursday night from 6:00 – 8:00.  And we need help Wednesday afternoon setting up or Friday, at the end of the day, taking down. There are opportunities to volunteer in three ways:

  1. We need people to help set up experiments on Wednesday afternoon and/or return  experiments to storage on Friday afternoon,
  1. We need people to help with logistics – keeping children from wandering off, helping them cross the street from their buses to the gym, monitoring the restrooms and running basic festival errands. If you can work both shifts on a given day, it will be most helpful.
  1. We need people to help conduct an experiment. (Don’t worry – we will set it up and help you learn how.) We have San Jac faculty and students from the departments who are planning to manage experiment stations, but we also have “Mind Trekkers” experiments that our team will set up – and we need people to operate these experiments.  Again, if you can work both shifts on a given day, it will be most helpful.

We would never assign you to a task you can’t manage, but if you have a preference of type of service, let us know. We will train you, dear employees and students. Training varies, but it will be convenient to your location and your schedule we hope, and it will require minimal time. We will also offer a refresher, beginning at 8:00 a.m. on the day you serve – no matter what type of assignment you are given (5:30  p.m. for Thursday’s Family Night). All events are located in or near the Central Campus gymnasium, Student Center, and Ball Technical Building.

This is a college initiative, and it is important to all of our communities. On Thursday, we are hosting Galena Park ISD, Channelview ISD, La Porte ISD, and Clear Creek ISD.  On Friday, we are hosting Deer Park ISD, Pasadena ISD, Sheldon ISD and the Rhodes School. We will have about 1150 6th graders at any given time.

If you are willing to work at the event (with your supervisor’s approval), please click on the link below and complete the form.

If you have questions, contact either Yessenia Jimenez at Yessenia.Jimenez@sjcd.edu or Rosie Helms at Rosselle.Helms@sjcd.edu.

We will provide breakfast on the day you serve and a box lunch (during the 30 minute break). We appreciate your consideration. This is going to be a really neat event. In case of inclement weather, all events are moved indoors.

Dress comfortably. Wear your San Jac shirt, t-shirt, sweatshirt, sweater, etc. Just represent San Jac, please. We will have a Mind Trekkers t-shirt for our volunteers.

We are also hosting this event on Thursday night from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. as a Family Night.  The Family Night will be free and open to the public. Help us get the word out to your neighbors and friends. We would love for you to come out with your family. Get Your Geek On!
