SJC South history prof. Mike Guardia to present “Hal Moore: Lessons in Leadership” April 12

The life and leadership of U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Harold Gregory “Hal” Moore will be presented by Army veteran, military historian, San Jacinto College history professor and internationally-recognized author Mike Guardia on Wednesday, April 12.

Sponsored by the San Jacinto College chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success and the San Jacinto College Centers of Excellence for Veteran Student Success, Guardia’s presentation “Hal Moore: Lessons in Leadership” will present a rare and interesting look at Moore’s heroic leadership principles that saved the lives of most of his outnumbered battalion in one of the earliest battles of the Vietnam War in 1965. These principles led to his success both on and off the battlefield, perfecting the art of a leader’s interpersonal skills.

Guardia’s first biography about Moore, “Hal Moore: A Soldier Once…and Always” chronicled the life of the Army lieutenant general whose battlefield leadership was first popularized by the 2002 film “We Were Soldiers” starring Mel Gibson as Moore. Guardia is preparing to release his second book, “Hal Moore on Leadership,” on Memorial Day 2017.

Guardia has given presentations at the U.S. Special Operations Command, the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C. and the George Bush Presidential Library. His work has been reviewed in the Washington Times, Military Review, Armchair General Magazine, DefenseWeb South Africa and Soldier Magazine UK. He holds a Bachelor and Master of Arts in American History from the University of Houston and currently teaches history at the San Jacinto College South Campus.

The “Hal Moore: Lessons in Leadership” presentation takes place on Wednesday, April 12 from 6 to 7 p.m., in room S12.102 of the Interactive Learning Center (building 12) at the San Jacinto College South Campus, located at 13735 Beamer Road in Houston. The event is free and open to the public. Guests are encouraged to register by April 10 via email at
