Prepping for Winter Break
Before Heading Out for the Holidays…
Every San Jacinto College employee that is assigned a laptop is responsible for the security of that laptop; this responsibility is heightened when traveling or otherwise away from the office. Those of you with assigned laptops who are planning to take them with you during the break, please be sure to keep them secured when not in use! Helpful tips on keeping your laptop secured are available on the ITS website.
Phishing Emails
If you will be checking your email during the holiday break, please stay alert of any phishing emails that may arrive in your inbox. We will never ask for your username and password details in an e-mail or by phone. If you receive a suspicious email, please report it by using the junk email reporting tool or forward the email to TechSupport@sjcd.edu.
Free Copy of Microsoft Office
Are you buying a new computer for the holidays and need Microsoft Office? San Jacinto College employees can download and install Microsoft Office for FREE! This software can be installed on up to five Windows PC, Mac OS, and mobile devices. You can use Office for free as long as you remain an active employee with the college. News on behalf of Dr. DeRhonda McWaine, department chair of college prep
Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc.
American Education Week
Legacy Educator Award
Dr. Carla Garrett, who is a fourth generation educator and college prep writing professor at San Jacinto College, recently received the 2016 Legacy Educator Award from the Iota Phi Lambda Sorority.
The awards program took place on Nov. 19, 2016 in Houston, Texas. Garrett was recognized for her diverse skill set and her contributions to society. With a background in educational leadership, business and language arts, she has spearheaded several programs that have enhanced the lives of learners of all ages. Some of her contributions include aiding in the creation of a GED program for homeless women in East Texas, and partnering with the University of Memphis to initiate the integrated reading, writing and technology programs in Tennessee middle schools through the Race for the Top initiative.
In 1921, the National Education Association (NEA) called for the designation of one week each year to spotlight education. During the month of November, in observance of American Education Week, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority honors a distinguished legacy educator who has made outstanding contributions in the fields of education and business. The sorority honors legacies because of their generational commitment to helping others realize their dreams.
Founded in 1929 in Chicago, Illinois, this distinction was first celebrated nationally by the sorority in 1947. The founding of the sorority was important for African American women because after World War I there was the “Great Migration” of African Americans from the South to the Northern cities in search of opportunities and a more tolerant society. With this migration, changes underscored the need to learn new skills within a new economic environment. These skills, in turn, would hopefully ensure a better way of life for millions of African Americans who migrated northward.
The awards program took place on November 19, 2016 in Houston, Texas, where Dr. Garrett received the 2016 Legacy Educator Award.
Wow, Carla! This is wonderful news! What a great candidate you are that they chose you. I am so happy for you. 🙂
