Hurricane Preparedness Information

SJC AlertMe

We are approaching peak hurricane season. The National Weather Service (NWS) is monitoring several systems in the Atlantic. While none pose an immediate threat to the United States, it is a good reminder to be prepared.

This is a good time for you to review your contact information in SOS to ensure it is correct and up-to-date. If an emergency arises on one of our campuses, or if we need to contact students and employees due to weather, we would activate the SJC AlertMe emergency notification system. We will always contact you by email, but you can also opt in to receive voice and text alerts. To sign up or to check your contact information, log in to SOS and click on the red SJC AlertMe tab, or visit the SJC AlertMe website. The attached document will help you navigate SOS to review and update your information. Please note that any changes you make apply only to SJC AlertMe, and not your student or employee record.

You are also encouraged at this time of year to be prepared for a tropical disturbance or cyclone in the Gulf of Mexico. Some basic preparedness tips include:

  • Know where to go. If you are ordered to evacuate, know the local hurricane evacuation route(s) to take and have a plan for where you can stay. Contact your local emergency management agency for more information.
  • Put together a disaster supply kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, first aid supplies, and copies of your critical information if you need to evacuate.
  • If you are not in an area that is advised to evacuate and you decide to stay in your home, plan for adequate supplies in case you lose power and water for several days and you are not able to leave due to flooding or blocked roads.
  • Make a family emergency communication plan.
