Informational Alert – Campus Carry

As you may know the Texas Legislature approved and passed two gun laws: House Bill 910, more commonly known as the Open Carry law; and Senate Bill 11, also known as the Campus Carry law.

The Campus Carry law does not go into effect for community colleges, including San Jacinto College, until next year – August 1, 2017. The Campus Carry law permits valid licensed handgun owners to lawfully carry their concealed handgun in certain areas on a university campus, excluding those areas designated as areas where handguns may not be carried, beginning this Monday, August 1, 2016.

Open Carry began in Texas this past January, but is not allowed on any premise of a Texas community college or public four-year college or university. Open Carry allows licensed permit holders to lawfully carry their handgun in a waist belt or shoulder holster.

Currently, no firearms are allowed on any San Jacinto College campus or property, openly or concealed. If you see anyone carrying a firearm on campus, please call the San Jacinto College Police Department immediately at extension 5555 from a campus phone, or 281-476-9128 from a cell phone.

San Jacinto College strives to provide a safe place for teaching and learning. We understand that many of you have differing opinions on both sides of the new gun laws. We appreciate the feedback we have received through surveys and emails, and plan to conduct additional stakeholder sessions regarding recommended gun-free areas on our campuses, while monitoring how the law is implemented at four-year public colleges and universities throughout Texas this fall. A draft of the recommended gun-free areas at San Jacinto College will be presented to the San Jacinto College Board of Trustees in early 2017 for adoption, which will then be sent to the Texas legislature for review and approval.

You are encouraged to be informed and knowledgeable about both the Open Carry and Campus Carry laws. More information about both, including Frequently Asked Questions and links to download the text to both laws, is available online at
