Purchasing Tidbit- Changes to Sparkletts Water Delivery Service

Here is your latest edition of Purchasing Tidbits.  Please contact Contracts & Purchasing Services with any questions at contracts.purchasing@sjcd.edu or x6117.

Changes to Sparkletts Water Delivery Service:
    ·         Sparkletts will begin issuing a delivery receipt when water is delivered.  Please verify that the receipt matches the quantity and the items delivered. These receipts are for your records only.
    ·         Invoices are paid monthly by Budget Control and are automatically charged to the department FOAP that was provided at the time the delivery location was established.
    ·         Verify the delivery receipt items match the invoice payments. This can be checked in Banner screen FGITRND.
    ·         Budget Control has copies of the monthly invoices, not the delivery receipts, so please keep your own records accordingly.
    ·         Special order requests can be placed by calling Sparkletts at 1-866-307-6092.
    ·         For questions regarding new account set-up or changes to your current Sparkletts location, email Patsy Laredo in Contracts and Purchasing (patsy.laredo@sjcd.edu).

    Helpful and Cost Saving Tips:
    ·         Save $$$ – Did you know a 5-gallon bottle of water is equivalent to over 1 1/2 cases of bottled water but costs less than half the price?
    o   5-gallon bottle of water (640 oz.) = $2.49
    o   Case of 16.9 oz bottles (406 oz.) = $5.99

    ·         Help San Jac “Go Green” by ordering 5-gallon water bottles and drinking from reusable cups.

Common Reading Committee hosts “To Kill a Mockingbird” panel

Over 75 people attended the lawyer panel discussion hosted by the South Campus Common Reading Committee in collaboration with Central Campus Philosophy Professor, Thi Lam, and South Campus Speech Professor, Cristina Doda Cárdenas. The panel discussed the common reading book, To Kill a Mockingbird and how it has influenced the law today. Dr. Greg Smith, South Campus English Professor and Common Reading Committee Chair, gave a brief overview of the book and showed a powerful clip from the movie.

Mr. Alberto P. Cárdenas Jr. counsel at Vinson and Elkins began the conversation of how the law has been influenced by the book.  He began with an explanation of some of his favorite parts of the book as well as some of the most meaningful for himself.  He then proceeded to talk about some of the visual differences we can now see and experience when comparing the movie and the book to present day in terms of the jury process and the grand jury selection process.  Mr. Cárdenas highlighted the role that several court cases have had in ensuring that we are judged by a jury of our peers. Diabetes Awareness event at South Campus

On April 7th, the South Campus Diabetes United team hosted Sara Aranda, Benefits Coordinator, and Mario Garcia, South Campus Pharmacy Tech Program Director, who gave presentations on the various benefits we have as employees.  Sara showed everyone the United Healthcare website and discussed the different health benefits we have as employees.  She covered emergency room, eye, feet and general doctor visits as well as our different dental plans. She also showed how to utilize the cell phone app, sign up for the United Healthcare wellness programs, how to get in touch with a real nurse 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and how to save lots of money for all kinds of activities.   Mario showed how to navigate the Caremark website by emphasizing how to do some comparison shopping for generic vs. name brand drugs.  He also showed how to run drug interaction reports.  Both presentations were outstanding and all those that attended were amazed with the information they learned at the Diabetes United Team meeting.  All employees are welcomed to attend our monthly meetings.  For further information please contact Judy Harrison at judy.harrison@sjcd.edu.

South Campus wraps up Women’s History Month in March

On March 25th, as part of the month long recognition of National Women’s History Month, the South Campus Women’s History Month committee hosted an art exhibit and reception entitled “Weaving the Women of Fine Arts.” Women Artists that contributed their work for the show were Professor Lou Brock, Department Chair Christina Potts, and Lab Supervisor Mary Smith.  Dance Professor, Jaime Williams was also in attendance.  The event provided everyone the opportunity to meet and mingle and view some great art.  There were over fifty in attendance.  The incredible refreshments were provided by the Culinary Arts program at North Campus under the direction of Professor Timothy Banks.  Attendees enjoyed sesame chicken skewers, mini shredded barbeque chicken sandwiches, and meatballs.  For dessert, there were platters of grapes, strawberries, and French macaroons. All the food was prepared and served by North Campus Culinary Arts students. The South Campus Women’s History Month Committee and the Women of Integrity Program would like to thank all those that attended and made this inaugural event such a success, and in particular Loura De Los Santos and Denton Davies.

Professor Stanley and students volunteer for City of Pasadena!

Professor Tanya Stanley recently partnered with the City of Pasadena Volunteer Program for the Adopt A Waterway program. This partnership allows her students to come together to clean up the waterway as part of their service-learning component. Professor Stanley incorporates research, article analysis assignments, reflections, and exams before and after the event in connection with student engagement and civic responsibility and several student learning outcomes. Teamwork, organization, and self-responsibility are at the core of the entire project. “It’s fascinating to connect GUST 0305, INRW 0302, and ENGL 1301 students during one event,” said Stanley.

Check out the City of Pasadena website for a photo of Professor Stanley and her students!
