    Trustee Marie Flickinger honored at public reception 

    At a recent public reception, District 11 State Senator Larry Taylor presented San Jacinto College Board of Trustees member Marie Flickinger a proclamation from the State of Texas honoring her for earning the Association of Community College Trustees 2013 M. Dale Ensign Trustee Leadership Award. A former San Jacinto College Board chair, Flickinger is also chair of the Board of the Community College Association of Texas Trustees, and chair of the Two-Year College Stakeholder Committee with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Flickinger is owner and publisher of the South Belt-Ellington Leader newspaper.

    Students to host stargazing party at new San Jacinto College observatory 

    San Jacinto College students will host a stargazing party at the new South Campus science and allied health building’s observatory deck on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

    Students in the Physics 1403 Stars and Galaxies course will serve as “tour guides” to participants. Telescopes of many shapes and sizes, including the new 16 inch reflector telescope in the observatory dome, will be available for viewing the night sky.

    The star party is free and open to the public. Rain or shine, the event is set for Tuesday, Nov. 12 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the South Campus science and allied health building (building 1) third floor astronomy observatory deck.

    Electronics recycling event set for November 

    San Jacinto College will hold an electronics recycling event on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the South Campus.

    Now in its second year partnering with 5R (Recycle, Reuse, Reclaim, Re-engineer, and Reduce) Processors, San Jacinto College continues its efforts to promote environmental responsibility throughout the College and surrounding communities.

    Community members and businesses are invited to drop off any old or unused electronics, which will help keep these devices out of landfills. Items that will be accepted include computers, monitors, keyboards, laptops, printers, fax machines, TVs, cell phones, stereo equipment, microwaves, and more. 5R Processors will also be provided an optional Department of Defense-approved data cleansing service for $10 per hard drive. Items that will not be accepted include hazardous waste, liquids, fluorescent bulbs, Freon items, smoke detectors, and large household items.

    The electronics recycling event will be held Saturday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in parking lot 6 at the San Jacinto College South Campus. The event is free and open to the public and area businesses. The South Campus is located at 13735 Beamer Road in Houston.

    Texas Invitational Basketball Tournament 2013 

    The College is a sponsor of the Texas Invitational Basketball Tournament, a state-wide high school basketball tournament benefiting Pasadena and Deer Park ISD’s. As a sponsor, we receive free game passes, which typically cost $20.

    We are offering the passes to 2 people, with each person receiving 4 passes. First come, first served. The passes are good for all games, all days of the tournament, from Nov. 21 – 23. Those interested should email Janet Cowey in the marketing office at janet.cowey@sjcd.edu. The first two email responses will receive the passes.
