    Change in Learning Management System 

    Farewell SJC Avatar LMS: The new SJC Spark Learning Portal is here.

    SanJac_artwork_13_Spark_72San Jacinto College is in the process of implementing a new Learning Management System (LMS) to replace the existing SJC Avatar LMS.  The go-live date for the new Spark Learning Portal is Monday, 1 July 2013.

    Beginning today, Monday, 24 June 2013, the Avatar system will no longer be available to SJC employees.  During this week existing training data will be transferred from Avatar into Spark.  If you have registered for a course that is offered from 24 June through 8 July in Avatar, your attendance will be recorded by the training facilitator on a roster, and the information uploaded into Spark.     Dr. Heafer earns state award 


    Congratulations to Dr. Dianne Heafer, who recently received the David C. De Boe Award from the Texas State Historical Association. The De Boe award is given to faculty sponsors for outstanding achievement with a Webb Society chapter.

    She is shown with the award in the photo above with Dr. Richard Bailey, who presented her a recognition certificate at a recent board of trustees meeting.

    Dr. Heafer has served as the North Campus Webb Society sponsor since 1993. Under her guidance, the student history club has grown to an average of 25 students each school year.

    Dr. Heafer holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas, and a BA, MA and PhD  from the University of Houston. She began her teaching career in 1971 at Houston Community College, then moved to San Antonio in 1982, where she taught at San Antonio College until 1993, when she came to San Jacinto College. She teaches primarily American History, but also Western Civilization/World Civilization. Dr. Heafer has received a number of teaching awards during her career, and was the Piper Award Nominee from the North Campus in 1998.

    Martinez participates in UNESCO project 

    Modern languages instructor Juan Martinez recently traveled to Belgrade, Serbia assisting in a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) project. (More …)

    Facebook and LinkedIn Best Practices 


    You need to have at least two or three administrators for your page.  The page manager should add the administrators who should use their personal Facebook account.  Once the administrators are added, assign them an admin role.  The table below shows the different admin roles.  We recommend you have two managers.

    Edit the Page and Add Apps

    Create Posts as the Page

    Respond to and Delete Comments

    Send Messages as the Page


    If you would like to block certain words on your page, go to Edit Settings under the Edit tab at the top of your timeline.  Add words in the Moderation Blocklist.  Use this to block inappropriate language. (More …)

    The sound of music 

    North Band Camp 13x

    The recent North Campus 2013 Summer Band Camp had more than 150 participants, which is an all-time record.

    The talented young musicians were under the tutelage of several area college, and secondary music teachers that included Michael Lehew, Aaron Allison, Bobby Guess, Jennifer Tunink, Danny Baca, Mark Santos, Paul Harris, Deborah Rathke, Carl Muller, Bryan Mandella, and Dr. Randy Snyder, the Summer Music Camp Coordinator.

    Dr. Snyder, North Campus fine arts department chair, is shown in the related photo (back row, center) along with many of the bright young musicians who were ready for some educational fun.

    There are a variety of fun and educational camps for young people taking place throughout the summer at all three San Jacinto Colleges, each under the direction of San Jacinto College faculty, staff, and students.

    SBDC advisor recognized 


    Tom Shirreffs, Professional Business Advisor with the College’s Small Business Development Center, was recently honored as the Educator of the Month by the North Channel Chamber of Commerce due to his contributions to the North Channel area. For the fiscal year that ended Oct. 1, 2012, Shirreffs’ clients generated 92 jobs, and those jobs created an estimated $3.5 million in capital. The SBDC maintains an office at the North Campus, where Shirreffs offers guidance and counsel to small business clients. He is shown in the above photo, at left, receiving the recognition certificate from North Channel Chamber of Commerce President Dr. Charles Grant, who formerly served as the North Campus president.
