The Central Campus music department recently hosted the University of Calypso, billed as the “largest steel band in Houston’s history,” featuring 68 steel band musicians. Central Campus Steel Band student musicians, under the direction of music professor Mike Mizma, were prominently showcased during the mega concert, enjoyed by a large crowd in the Slocomb Auditorium.

The steel bands of Lone Star College North Harris, and Texas A&M collaborated with the Central Campus Steel Band during the performance.

Due to Student Success Initiative funding from the San Jacinto College Foundation, headline performers for the concert included internationally renowned musicians Andy Narell (a skilled steel pan artist and composer), Mark Walker (a Berklee College of Music drumset professor), and Willard Harris (aka “Lord Realtor,” regarded as one of the world’s best calypso performers).

“The concert would not have been as successful, as interesting, or as effective a community outreach performance without generous support from the Brown Foundation, and the San Jacinto College Foundation,” commented Mizma. “That enabled us to produce one of the finest concerts in my 23 years at San Jacinto College. As the concert progressed the audience reactions became more energetic and enthusiastic. By the end of the concert the audience was shouting and finished by giving the performers a standing ovation.”
