It is with great sadness to announce the recent passing of retiree Donald Franklin.  Mr. Franklin was a police officer on Central campus from January 2001 through August 2006, and then served as a part-time employee until his retirement in July 2010.

Donald R. Franklin, Sr., of Pasadena, Texas, formerly of Rossville, Illinois, died Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at La Porte Healthcare Center. Born June 13, 1932 in Rossville, he was the son of Herbert and Nora Gale Franklin. Mr. Franklin graduated from Rossville Community High School in May, 1950, and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Eastern Illinois University.

Mr. Franklin married Janet Ellen Thomas of Hoopeston, Illinois in 1953, and they had four children together. He married Terry Jane Carlson Douglass of Cissna Park, Illinois, in 1981, and they had one child together.

Mr. Franklin served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a teacher and coach on the high school level, primarily in Illinois. He worked in law enforcement and education after moving to Texas. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and was a motorcycle police officer until he retired in 2010.

Mr. Franklin was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Curtis Franklin, of Pasadena, Texas, who passed away on January 25, 2011, as well as his parents and one brother, Herbert (Peanut) Franklin, Jr.

Survivors are two sons, Donald R. Franklin, Jr. (wife, Mary) of Lafayette, Indiana, and Anthony B. Franklin (wife, Jennifer) of Easley, South Carolina; two daughters, Heidi L. Reible of Urbana, Illinois, and Trudy A. Monroe (husband, Kenneth) of Mt. Zion, Illinois; two brothers, Harry Franklin (wife, Martha) of Lumberton, Texas, and Jim Franklin of Palm Springs, California; one sister, Helen Brown of Florida; and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service for Mr. Franklin will be held at the Rossville Cemetery on Saturday, September 3 at 4 pm.
