Let’s Mardi Gras

The North campus will host a Community Cook-off on Saturday, March 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring a Mardi Gras theme.

The cooking contest includes three categories: gumbo, jambalaya, and desserts. Registration is now open for cooking teams interested in participating, and the entry deadline is Feb. 28. The winning cook-off team in each category will receive a trophy and a cash prize. The entry fee is $35 per category for each team. To register, please call 281-998-6150 extension 7526, or email charlotte.jackson@sjcd.edu.

“We are planning to also have a culinary student category for SJC culinary students, and we are inviting other culinary schools in the Houston area to participate in all categories,” commented SJC culinary arts instructor Sean Perrodin.

The panel of judges will include SJC employees, students, and community members. The event is free and open to the public, and vendors will be on hand selling food, beverages, craft items, and other goods and services. There will be a $7 charge to sample any of the food prepared by the cooking teams. Proceeds from the cook-off support the College’s student-operated culinary arts club.

SJC students will perform live music, under the direction of Dr. Randy Snyder, the North campus music department chair.

The site for the cook-off will be Parking Lot C, located adjacent to the Slovacek Student Center on the east side of the campus. The SJC North campus is located at 5800 Uvalde Road in Houston.

Other activities will include a crawfish eating contest, and a “kiddie carnival” where children can make Mardi Gras masks, draw on a coloring wall, romp around in an inflatable jump room, and enjoy other fun activities.
