Open house marks opening of new child care center at North campus

The North campus recently hosted an open house and ribbon cutting to mark the opening of the new Charles Ray Ogden Children and Family Education Center-Lab School building.

The open house featured guided tours, multi-media presentations, live music, and light refreshments. The new 9,669-square-feet facility is located on the north side of the North campus.

Guests were welcomed by Kathy Greenway, director of the child care center-lab school, and Christine Ortiz-Gatlin, the North campus child development/early childhood education program director.

The new center includes classrooms, offices, a kitchen, a teacher workroom, a multi-purpose room, and a playground. The facility serves a dual purpose — to provide child care services for students and employees of the North campus, and to serve as a learning environment where North campus child development students can gain valuable hands-on experience in every facet of full-service child care. I’m proud to see everyone enjoying the new Child Care facility. It has been a long time coming with all the planning, design, and construction time. Thanks to everyone for all their efforts.

North employees perk up at Espresso meeting

Chef Tim Banks and Sandra Curry at the Staff Espresso meeting.

North campus employee Sandra Curry recently coordinated the monthly Staff Espresso meeting, held in the Chablis dining room. The regular professional development meetings provide employees networking opportunities.

The guest speaker for the meeting was Tim Banks, a culinary arts instructor at the North campus. Employees enjoyed tasty treats prepared by culinary arts students, while Mr. Banks discussed the history and different types of chocolate. Chef Banks also provided a taste-testing session with three types of coffee (light, medium, and dark) and discussed the history and caffeine content in each type.

Each of the three campuses has a designated Staff Espresso coordinator, who selects speakers and topics for each month’s meeting.

Our deepest sympathy to Janine Kerr in the recent passing of her step-mother Doris Munsch.  She passed away Sunday, October 24. Services will be held in Grand Prairie, Texas later this week.

Janine is a Banner Student Instructional Specialist on the South Campus.

    Below was submitted from Janine

My step-mother, Doris Munsch, passed away Sunday, October 24 after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for eight years.  She was an elementary school teacher for over 30 years before retirement.  We watched this terrible disease steal away her memories of us all.  The Doris we knew and loved has been gone for some time, but the body she lived in has now found rest and peace.  Through all this, we have learned to love more deeply, live more fully and savor each moment God gives us.  Services will be held in Grand Prairie, Texas later this week.
