Professor’s work included in academic newsletter

    Janice Di Falco

Congratulations to Janice Di Falco, nursing professor at the Central campus, who had an item included in “Brain Research and Instruction,” an academic newsletter produced by noted educator and speaker Dr. Janet Zadina.

The Spring 2010 newsletter included a copy of Di Falco’s “Student Success Agreement,” a “contract” in which a student commits to partner with a teacher to work toward positive educational outcomes together. Di Falco’s student contract contains very specific guidelines and is designed to foster a structured, orderly classroom learning environment.

“I am very proud to represent San Jacinto College and have already begun to receive request by readers of the newsletter requesting permission to use my tools,” Di Falco commented. “I want to acknowledge the distinguished faculty recognition program and the QEP program that I participate in that stimulated me to develop creative new strategies for student success.”

A copy of the newsletter that contains Di Falco’s “Student Success Agreement” is available online at:

Thank you professor Di Falco for sharing such a valuable resource with your colleagues.

South cosmetology receives more than 400 inches of hair!

The San Jacinto College South cosmetology department received more than 400 inches of donated hair last week during the Share Your Hair event.

Clients from across the Houston area visited the South campus to receive their free haircuts in exchange for donating their ponytails toward the Locks of Love organization. Ellie Meyer, coordinator of student life, had plenty of hair to give  and appeared on live television on Fox 26 Morning News to have SJC student Jarrod Jantz and cosmetology chair Mary Lindsay cut off 40 inches of her hair. Inmigrante TV and ABC13 also publicized the event, stopping by the South campus to interview cosmetology students and instructors, Pandora Freestone and Elida Mercado.

    First impressions are important

From left, Steven Little, Arleen Arnsparger, Dr. Neil Matkin, Dr. Barbara Hanson, and Dr. Laurel Williamson.

Central campus administrators and staff members gathered recently for a “First Impressions” seminar. Blending lively anecdotes, compelling statistics, multimedia presentations, with a large dash of humor, keynote speakers Arleen Arnsparger and Steven Little drove home just how important it is for students to have a favorable first impression of San Jacinto College during their initial counseling, admissions and orientation sessions. Little is a highly-acclaimed business growth consultant, and Arnsparger is a key executive with the Center for Community College Student Engagement.

Key Central campus administrators attending the entertaining and informative meeting included Dr. Neil Matkin, president; Dr. Barbara Hanson, vice president of instruction, Dr. Timothy Elliot, dean of weekend and evening college; Dr. Steven Horton, dean of technical education; Van Wigginton, academic dean; Dr. James Braswell, administrative dean; and Karen Blankenship, library director.

Central campus division operations managers, as well as key administrative assistants also attended the meeting.

Dr. Laurel Williamson, district vice chancellor of instruction program services, and Dr. Sarah Janes, vice president of continuing and professional development, were also on hand for the key seminar. Click on any photo below for a larger view.

Blood Center honors North campus employee

North campus employee Becky Martinez was recently awarded the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center Path for Success award. Largely due to her efforts, the North campus hosted numerous blood drives during 2009.

Becky Martinez, left, with Shannon Cook.

Becky has been hosting North campus blood drives because of her enthusiasm, and her “Commitment for Life.” Becky has personally donated 68 units for the Blood Center, and is building a pyramid of her gallon mugs.

Shown in the related photo with Becky is Shannon Cook, an account representative for the Blood Center, and a former San Jac student. Shannon says she would be happy to speak to any San Jacinto College student organization or employee association on behalf of the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center.

    North campus hosts Career Expo

North campus students and employees who worked together to present the successful Career Expo include, from left (back row): Jose Lara, Roneshia Saddler, Cindy Murillo, Amber Furst, Marvis Huff, Ruth Keenan, Donna Matthews, Verenice Mares, and Matthew Gonzalez; (front row): Aldec Saniel, Noelia Ibarra, Keyth Citizen, Eric Sanchez, Roxanne Gomez, and Leticia Martinez.

The North campus recently hosted Career Expo 2010, which allowed students and local residents to network with many Houston area employers.

Those attending took advantage of résumé critiquing, Discover testing, and Dress for Success referrals for women. Men chose from a collection of donated neckties. SJC cosmetology students provide free makeover services, and The Clothes Horse offered fashion tips for job seekers.

Career Expo 2010 was coordinated by the North campus career and employment center, which offers resource materials in résumé preparation, interviewing skills and individual consultation.

“We want to thank all those who helped make this event a tremendous success,” commented Ruth Keenan, Career Employment Center Coordinator at the North campus. “We appreciate the fine student volunteers for their assistance in representing San Jacinto College for the two-day event which highlighted 35 employers on the first day, and 32 employers on the second. We had many employers comment on the fine attention to detail and warm hospitality shown by our students.”
