STEM scholarships and Opportunities

San Jacinto College offers scholarships to assist students who are pursuing education and career training in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.

The Houston-Louis Stokes Alliance For Minority Participation Scholars (LSAMP) Program

  • The program, funded through the National Science Foundation, is designed to increase the number of minority students graduating with baccalaureate degrees in STEM and to better prepare them for graduate degrees. Students majoring in biology, chemistry, computer science, geology, Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT), mathematics, physics, and related areas and who meet the selection criteria are eligible to apply. Recipients are awarded $700 per semester.

The Texas Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (T-STEM) Challenge Scholarship Program

  • This scholarship program is funded through grants provided by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The program supports qualified, high-achieving full-time students enrolled in courses or degree programs that lead to careers in STEM. The College awards approximately 100 T-STEM scholarships per year, at amounts depending on the number of hours a student is taking. Maximum amount per year is $2,500.

The SJC-STEM Scholarship Program

  • This scholarship program offers merit scholarships based on past and continued student performance in specific instructional programs. Students in their second year are encouraged to apply. Recipients selected will receive $500 for full-time course load or $250 per semester for part-time course load.

San Jacinto College Chemistry Scholarship at the Central Campus

  • The intent of the scholarship is to help students who are interested in a STEM field, afford college. Award amounts vary.

C2 STEM Transitions- NASA Grant Scholarship

  • This scholarship is geared toward students who have an interest in pursuing degrees for the aerospace industry and other STEM-related fields. Part-time students are eligible to receive a minimum of $500 per semester, and full-time students are eligible to receive a minimum of $1,250 per semester.

NASA Internships

NASA internships are paid educational opportunities that provide unique NASA-related research and operational experiences for undergraduate community college students. These internships integrate participants with NASA mentors to engage in scientific or engineering research, development, and operations activities. Participants leverage NASA’s unique mission activities and mentorship to enhance and increase their professional capabilities and clarify their long-term career goals. NASA internships are full time and conducted at 1 of 10 NASA facilities.

Application DEADLINE

Spring internship applications are accepted: 06/02/2015 – 11/09/2015

        Summer internship applications are accepted: 11/10/2015 – 03/01/2016

NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) Program

Community college students interested in exploring a STEM career at NASA can apply to become a NASA Community College Aerospace Scholar.

Scholars learn about past, present and future Mars mission in a 5-week online session. Scholars who successfully complete the web-based activities may be eligible for a 3-day workshop at NASA, where they will:

  • Work on a team project directed by NASA engineers
  • Attend briefings by NASA engineers and scientists
  • Tour NASA facilities
  • Open the door to a world of career possibilities at NASA!

Rice University Summer Undergraduate Research Program

Interested in research training in biosciences and bioengineering at Rice University? This 10-week summer program provides a creative opportunity for students to develop innovative biotechnological ideas; leadership, mentorship and social retreats; special seminars and career development workshops; stipend and travel support; on-campus housing; a research poster symposium; and an ethics and responsible conduct of research discussion seminar.
