Mace Retirement Ceremony and Unveiling of New College Mace

During fall 2018 College Community Week, the original three College commencement maces were retired in a formal ceremony.  Led by South Campus speech professor and Faculty Senate President, Cristina Cardenas, the Central, North and South Campus provosts and their respective faculty senate campus vice presidents served as the mace presenters for the ceremony: Central Campus English professor Dr. David LeMaster and Provost Van A. Wigginton, J.D.; North Campus history professor Dr. Stephen Lopez and Provost Dr. Bill Raffetto; and South Campus biology professor Dr. Karen Duston and Provost Dr. Brenda Jones.

South Campus Fine Arts Department Chair Jeff McGee gave a brief presentation about his work crafting the new College commencement mace, a process that has taken nearly two years. McGee discussed the research, design choices, symbolic elements, and the intricate processes used to create the new mace. The new commencement mace will make its first official appearance at the fall 2018 commencement ceremony at Minute Maid Park on Sunday, Dec. 16.
