Information regarding exposure of personal data by the Texas Comptroller’s office

The Texas Comptroller’s office released information earlier this week about the exposure of a large number of Texans’ personal information. The records of about 3.5 million people with personally identifying information were erroneously placed on a public server.

The information was in data transferred by the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), and the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS). According to a news release issued by the Comptroller’s office, there is no indication the personal information was misused. Beginning today, Wednesday, April 13, 2011, the Comptroller’s office is sending letters to those individuals whose information was inadvertently exposed.

If you would like to see if your personal information was jeopardized, a special toll free phone number has been set up for you to call at 1-855-474-2065. You will be able to check to see if you are receiving a notification letter by calling that toll free phone line. The toll free line will be open 24-hours a day through Tuesday, April 19.
