The Women’s History Month Committee at the San Jacinto College South Campus celebrated Women’s History month on March 3, 2016 with a luncheon highlighting this year’s theme: Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Public Service and Government. Professors B.K. Silva and Marcia Beyer collaborated on a presentation to educate students on the various contributions women have made to our Government through their public service.

Three women were honored for their Public Service in our community. Ms. Sylvia Brooks former President of the Houston Area Urban League encouraged students to get involved in their communities and to educate themselves on the various services provided by the Houston Area Urban League. Ms. Cheryl Johnson, Galveston County Tax Assessor-Collector motivated students to accomplish their educational goals no matter how much adversity they encounter. She shared her experience with them as a student herself and as a mother of high school and college students. Sr. Pamela van Giessen who is a Volunteer and the Outreach Coordinator at Santa Maria Hostel shared her story about the her path to service within a community.  She also shared with students how her skill with language translation opened several doors for her to help others.  There were 70 students who enjoyed a wonderful lunch consisting of chicken salad, savory puff pastry, and watermelon, grapes, and pineapple along with banana pudding prepared from scratch by students enrolled at the North Campus Culinary Arts program guided by Chef Timothy Banks.
