    Trick-or-treat parade

The little ones from the North Campus children center lab school dressed up in all sorts of cute and crazy costumes and went marching through the campus on a trick-or-treat parade on Oct. 31. Faculty, staff members, and students lined the parade route handing out goodies to the little characters.

Kudos to Kathy Greenway and all of the North Campus employees who helped to make the parade such a fun event.

To accommodate a large crowd, the September 19, 2011 Board Meeting was held at the Dr. Monte Blue Music Building on the Central Campus. Civic and government leaders, community residents, former students, and former employees gathered to commemorate the College’s 50th anniversary.

    Dual credit students recognized

North campus dual credit students recently gathered for an end-of-term recognition banquet to celebrate their accomplishments as high-achieving students.

The dual credit students honored at the banquet were from C.E. King, Channelview, Crosby, North Shore, and Galena Park high schools.

At the event, students, faculty and staff bade a fond farewell to Dr. Dennis Toombs, who is retiring after serving as a government professor for many years at San Jacinto College. Dr. Toombs attended the event because he served as an instructor for many of the dual credit students.

Kudos to all who helped to make the recognition banquet a big success, especially to the main coordinators Jennifer Mowdy, Cathy Andrusick, and Mary Cherry.

    Honoring the Bard

The life and works of William Shakespeare came to life at “Bard’s Bash,” presented recently by the Central campus English department to commemorate the birthday of the renowned English playwright.

Faculty, staff, and students gathered for the event on the lawn near the College’s student center. Some were dressed in Elizabethan period costumes, several portraying famous Shakespearian roles as period music played in the background. Students performed skits from well-known works of “the Bard.” Activities included Shakespeare trivia, a costume party, face painting, a portrait contest, and maypole dancing.

Kudos to Erin Callahan, Kim DeLauro, Heather McKnight, Barbara Brown, Nick  Weiss, Ann Pearson, William Wolfe, and other employees who helped to coordinate the entertaining and educational event.

    Gator Day 2011

North campus students, faculty, and staff members recently gathered for Gator Day — a full day of fun, food, music, and fellowship. Student organizations, such as the Culinary Arts Club, the Men of Honor, and many others, provided promotional items and sold food and beverages to raise funds.

Entertainment included a rock wall, a mechanical bull, and a wax hand booth.

Kudos to Lamar McWaine, student life coordinator, and Amanda Herrick, administrative assistant, for coordinating Gator Day, and all the other employees and students who helped make the event a big success.

College showcased at open house events

All three San Jacinto College campuses hosted open house events recently, offering previews of academic and technical programs, advising information, financial aid, and career resources.

Attendees explored the academic and technical programs offered by the College through interactive information booths from different departments. There were also job search strategies presented along with job training resources, financial aid advising, and campus tours.

Kudos to the many faculty members, academic counselors, financial aid advisors, and other SJC employees who provided such friendly and helpful service during the open house events at each campus.
