    Good times

District administration employees recently got together for the annual spring cookout, staged in the parking lot at the district office. Everyone enjoyed the delicious hot dogs, hamburgers, watermelons, and other goodies, as well as the team-building fellowship.

Kudos to chief cook Bill Dickerson, Director of Accounting and Financial Services, and other Business Office employees who helped put together the fun outing.

“This is a group effort from all the employees in the District and Annex buildings,” Bill said. “The administrators – D and E Band level, provided personal funds. Staff from various offices provided set-up and take-down support. I don’t want to name individuals, as I may inadvertently leave someone out that contributed.”

The cookout is an annual effort to enhance camaraderie among employees, and a good time was had by all.

“I believe it illustrates one of the College values, namely ‘Sense of Community and Collaboration,'” Bill commented.

    Honoring the Bard

The life and works of William Shakespeare came to life at “Bard’s Bash,” presented recently by the Central campus English department to commemorate the birthday of the renowned English playwright.

Faculty, staff, and students gathered for the event on the lawn near the College’s student center. Some were dressed in Elizabethan period costumes, several portraying famous Shakespearian roles as period music played in the background. Students performed skits from well-known works of “the Bard.” Activities included Shakespeare trivia, a costume party, face painting, a portrait contest, and maypole dancing.

Kudos to Erin Callahan, Kim DeLauro, Heather McKnight, Barbara Brown, Nick  Weiss, Ann Pearson, William Wolfe, and other employees who helped to coordinate the entertaining and educational event.

A Great Day for San Jacinto

Two significant anniversaries occur in 2011: the 175th anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto, and the 50th anniversary of San Jacinto College. Thanks largely to San Jacinto College history professor Dr. Eddie Weller, the College had a display booth at the recent San Jacinto Day Festival and Battle Reenactment. SJC culinary arts pastry chef students, under the direction of Steve Rudd, baked large cakes bearing anniversary wishes to Texas and to San Jacinto College, and SJC employees gave away slices of cake to people attending the big festival held at the San Jacinto Battlegrounds. SJC employees who helped out in the event include Amanda Booren, Rob Vanya, Jessica Elizondo, Kaye Moon Winters, Hollie Fulsom, Dr. Kerry Mix, Joshua Wilson, Dana Eifert, and LaVena Wilder.
