    District employees celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month 

    On October 14, district employees celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a delicious Latino potluck feast, coordinated by many employees.

    Muchas gracias to the following people who worked together to make the outstanding luncheon a tremendous success:

    George Gonzalez, Mini Izaguirre, Sally Sanchez, Tilly Slaten, Maria Gallegos, Michelle Callaway, Linda Perez, Erma Alvarez, Sara Aranda, Esmeralda Parrales, Karla Silva, Karina Trevino, Martha Martinez, and Rosemary Morales.

    The theme of Hispanic Heritage Month is “Many Backgrounds, Many Stories…One American Spirit.” During the luncheon, Hispanic families who have served in the United States military were honored. A slideshow was also on display that chronicled key events in the rich history of Hispanic Americans.

    50th Anniversary highlighted at board meeting 

    To accommodate a large crowd, the September 19, 2011 Board Meeting was held at the Dr. Monte Blue Music Building on the Central Campus. Civic and government leaders, community residents, former students, and former employees gathered to commemorate the College’s 50th anniversary.

    Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer interviewed Gene Blasingame, who attended as a student at SJC’s original temporary campus that was housed in renovated stores in downtown Pasadena in the early 1960s. (More …)

    Fond farewell 

    Many SJC employees gathered recently at the North Campus Chablis dining room to bid a fond farewell to a group of longtime employees who are retiring. The group includes Mary Buyer, Enrollment Services; Kaye Caley, Liberal Arts; Beverly Fischer, English; Javier Gonzalez, Grounds; James Hall, Evening Division; Dorothy McGraw, Business & Technology; Richard Thompson, Police, Dr. Dennis Toombs, Government, and Aliece Mobley, Liberal Arts. North Campus President Dr. Allatia Harris expressed the sentiments of many when she said the College would miss every one of the dedicated and professional employees.

    CPD in action 

    Networking at the maritime outlook conference.

    San Jacinto College was a Silver Sponsor at the recent Petrochemical Maritime Outlook Conference, coordinated by the Economic Alliance Houston Port Region. Continuing & Professional Development staff members represented the College well, networking with key industry and business leaders, and manning a SJC display booth. Shown in the photo at the conference are, from left, Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer; David Lewis, CPD Director of Business & Professions; Captain Mitch Schacter, Director of the SJC Maritime Training Center; Dr. Sarah Janes, CPD Vice President; and Dr. JD Taliaferro Jr., CPD Director of Applied Technologies.     It is with great sadness to announce the recent passing of retiree Donald Franklin.  Mr. Franklin was a police officer on Central campus from January 2001 through August 2006, and then served as a part-time employee until his retirement in July 2010.

    Donald R. Franklin, Sr., of Pasadena, Texas, formerly of Rossville, Illinois, died Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at La Porte Healthcare Center. Born June 13, 1932 in Rossville, he was the son of Herbert and Nora Gale Franklin. Mr. Franklin graduated from Rossville Community High School in May, 1950, and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Eastern Illinois University. (More …)

    North leaders gather for SWOT meeting 

    Dr. Allatia Harris reviews SWOT messages

    Key administrators and faculty members from the North campus recently gathered for a SWOT meeting to discuss Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Under the direction of North campus President Dr. Allatia Harris (photo above), the campus leaders provided input by writing their comments and observations on sticky notes that were displayed on the walls. The sticky note messages were then reviewed and summarized. (More …)

    Torres named to key position at North campus 

    Christine Torres was recently named Director of Educational Planning and Counseling for the North campus. She is no stranger to San Jacinto College.  For the last three years, she served as a shared counselor at Pasadena High School and Sam Rayburn High School. Before coming to San Jac, Christine worked at Houston Community College, where she served as an administrative assistant, in disability services, as a Spanish translator, and as a counselor.

    New arrival 

    Leighton Wilson

    North campus baseball coach DJ Wilson and his wife Alisha recently welcomed a new arrival. Leighton Paige Wilson was born on August 1, 2011 at 9:38 a.m. She was 8 lbs. 9 oz. and 21 inches long at birth. The Wilsons’ other daughters, Kylee and Madeline, also welcomed the arrival of their new little sister.

    Congratulations to the Wilson family on the birth of their new little bundle of joy.

    Discount for King Tut Exhibit 

    The Houston Museum of Fine Arts is offering a special discount (up to $8 per ticket) to San Jacinto College employees for the upcoming King Tut Exhibit. The event will be the first time for King Tut’s treasures to ever visit Houston.

    The exhibit opens on Oct. 16, and tickets go on sale in September, but SJC employees can purchase discounted tickets online before September. To buy discounted tickets, please visit http://www.kingtut.org/gold on the web. More details are also available by calling 713-758-7382.

    North campus hosts Disability Awareness Day 

    The North campus recently hosted Disability Awareness Day to promote awareness of issues faced by persons with disabilities.
    In addition to SJC faculty and staff members, representatives from several agencies were on hand to provide information, including Houston Center for Independent Living, Texas Veterans Commission, Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services, and the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Foundation.

    Kudos to the employees who helped make the event successful, including Verenice Mares, Senta Eastern, Erika Hernandez, Ana Martinez,  Adrian Stewart, Alfonso Alcazar, Leticia Martinez, LaNitra Fields, Elke Redmon, and Amanda Herrick.
