Trailblazer Dr. Gilmore earns ’40 Under 40′ award

Congratulations to Dr. LaToya Gilmore for earning a “40 Under 40” award from Prairie View A&M University based on her accomplishments as an emerging leader who has blazed a trail in her field.

“I had an amazing experience as an undergraduate at Prairie View and I use it to enhance, nurture, and inspire those I encounter,” Dr. Gilmore commented.

Prairie View’s 40 under 40 award recognizes 40 alumni under the age of 40 who use their experience at Prairie View to impact communities. “Our motto is ‘Prairie View Produces Productive People’ and being in this inaugural class is a tremendous honor,” Dr. Gilmore said.

Dr. Gilmore has indeed blazed a trail in her field. She earned a bachelor’s degree in less than four years from Prairie View, transferred to Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California where she earned a master’s of science in marriage and family therapy. While studying at Fuller, she participated in mission work in Africa along with six other female graduate students. The students assisted communities and visited schools throughout Uganda.

After graduating from Fuller, she worked as a family therapist in Compton, California for a non-profit organization prior to moving to Houston. Through other non-profit organizations, she provided in-home therapeutic services and education in communities around the city of Houston, including Sunnyside, Alief, Fifth Ward, Baytown, and Pasadena before beginning her teaching tenure at San Jacinto College.

She has also presented and facilitated programs at professional conferences across the state of Texas. During her doctoral studies at Texas Southern University, she was a member of Chi Sigma Iota Honor Society, later graduating magna cum laude.

In addition to teaching Learning Framework at the North Campus, she serves as a mentor and faculty advisor.

Dr. Gilmore holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Prairie View, a master’s in marriage and family therapy from Fuller, and a doctor of education in counselor education from TSU.

It is hard to believe that the spring semester is coming to a close. I have attached the San Jacinto College Summer Literacy Institute (SLI) details with the most current Call to Conference.  The field of Developmental Education is evolving, and SLI will address the many ways collaboration in and outside of the college is becoming an important conversation in how we accelerate students.  Doing that while providing students with productive academic experiences that support their academic and career goals has become a hot topic in Dev Ed. As seen on TV

The Pasadena Municipal Channel produced a video of a group of senior citizens from Pasadena’s Madison Jobe Senior Center, who recently dropped by for “pampering” at Central Campus. Culinary arts students prepared lunch for them and cosmetology students provided free hair styling.

Thanks to the Central Campus people who helped to make the visit successful, including Kay Richardson, Consumer Services Department Chair; David Vanover, Interior Design Program Director; Ernest Becerra, Culinary Arts Program Director; Marsha Smith, Cosmetology Adjunct Instructor; and Kathy Burris, Consumer Services Senior Administrative Assistant.
