    North Campus hosts Fall Fest

The North Campus recently hosted a Fall Fest at Channelview High School that turned out to be a great success, attracting hundreds of Channelview students of all ages, as well as many parents and little children.

Employees representing most North Campus academic and technical programs were on hand to greet visitors and hand out information about their programs. Players from the baseball team and the women’s basketball team mingled with visitors, and cosmetology students provided free face painting.

The music department provided live jazz music, the culinary arts program provided free hot dogs, and the mental health program coordinated a free cakewalk. Other highlights included a rock climbing wall, a photo booth, psychology analysis demonstrations, music, group dancing, popcorn, cotton candy, and robotics demonstrations.

Kudos to coordinators of the Fall Fest, including Clare Iannelli, Keisha Smoke, Chris Evans, Erin Lewis, Deborah Longtine, Andrea Mitchen, Dinorah Ramos, Rob Vanya, Christine Torres, Josh Johnson, Shawn Silman, Dr. Gary Friery, Serita Dickey, Jerrel Wade, Pam Campbell, Jennifer Mowdy, Dr. Bill Raffetto, Charlotte Jackson, Ludith Gonzalez, David Gardner, Alfredo Gomez, Louis Dorsey, Diana Zapata, Amy Ammerman, Jo Eggebrecht, Sergio Garcia, Nichole Fearnley, Deanna Clark, Patricia Rice, Mark Escobedo, Dana Kostecka, Mary Cherry, Rita Harris, Brenita Williams-Jackson, and Tom Arrington.

A Great Day for San Jacinto

Two significant anniversaries occur in 2011: the 175th anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto, and the 50th anniversary of San Jacinto College. Thanks largely to San Jacinto College history professor Dr. Eddie Weller, the College had a display booth at the recent San Jacinto Day Festival and Battle Reenactment. SJC culinary arts pastry chef students, under the direction of Steve Rudd, baked large cakes bearing anniversary wishes to Texas and to San Jacinto College, and SJC employees gave away slices of cake to people attending the big festival held at the San Jacinto Battlegrounds. SJC employees who helped out in the event include Amanda Booren, Rob Vanya, Jessica Elizondo, Kaye Moon Winters, Hollie Fulsom, Dr. Kerry Mix, Joshua Wilson, Dana Eifert, and LaVena Wilder.

    First impressions are important

From left, Steven Little, Arleen Arnsparger, Dr. Neil Matkin, Dr. Barbara Hanson, and Dr. Laurel Williamson.

Central campus administrators and staff members gathered recently for a “First Impressions” seminar. Blending lively anecdotes, compelling statistics, multimedia presentations, with a large dash of humor, keynote speakers Arleen Arnsparger and Steven Little drove home just how important it is for students to have a favorable first impression of San Jacinto College during their initial counseling, admissions and orientation sessions. Little is a highly-acclaimed business growth consultant, and Arnsparger is a key executive with the Center for Community College Student Engagement.

Key Central campus administrators attending the entertaining and informative meeting included Dr. Neil Matkin, president; Dr. Barbara Hanson, vice president of instruction, Dr. Timothy Elliot, dean of weekend and evening college; Dr. Steven Horton, dean of technical education; Van Wigginton, academic dean; Dr. James Braswell, administrative dean; and Karen Blankenship, library director.

Central campus division operations managers, as well as key administrative assistants also attended the meeting.

Dr. Laurel Williamson, district vice chancellor of instruction program services, and Dr. Sarah Janes, vice president of continuing and professional development, were also on hand for the key seminar. Click on any photo below for a larger view.

    Gator Day 2010

Employees & students enjoy good times at Gator Day 2010.

The North campus Gator Day featured Laser Tag, Bungee Run, Mechanical Bull, Crazy Photo Booth, Rock Wall Climbing, music, and lots of fun, food, and fellowship. Student organizations raised funds by selling all sorts of delicious food, and many programs distributed promotional material to students. The successful event was put together by Lamar McWaine, North campus student life coordinator, shown at far left in above photo. Check out the slideshow below for more pix from Gator Day —
