Dr. Karen Hattaway, right, is shown with Dr. Laurel Williamson, deputy chancellor and president of San Jacinto College, who describes Hattaway as a faculty leader who takes on difficult challenges.

North Campus English professor Dr. Karen Hattaway was recently selected by the League for Innovation in the Community College to author the prestigious “Cross Papers #18,” a scholarly, in-depth monograph that will help to shape teaching strategies in many of the nation’s community colleges.

The format for the Cross Papers was established by K. Patricia Cross, a retired educator and scholar of educational research who wrote the first seven issues. Since the release of the inaugural issue in 1997, the Cross Papers have been designed to provide faculty with a body of useful, proven, practical strategies they can use in their classrooms to help improve their own teaching and their students’ learning.

Dr. Hattaway’s personal teaching philosophy centers on creating a better future. “I am a teacher because teaching creates a healthy future by encouraging students to build skills for work, learning, and thinking that will shape tomorrow,” she said. “Teaching is the only profession where what is created never goes out of style or wears out. Education is forever.”

Women’s basketball team culminates amazing season with awards banquet

The College’s women’s basketball team recently culminated one of the best seasons in the program’s history with an appreciation and awards banquet.

In an amazing turnaround season, the team went from 3-27 last year to 23-9 this season. Head Coach Brenita Jackson was named the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XIV Coach of the Year. The team was ranked nationally for much of the season appearing as high as ninth in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball poll in early January. It was the first time in the program’s history to be ranked in the top 10 nationally.

The team qualified for the regional tournament for the first time since 2011, advancing to the semifinal round before being eliminated by the defending national champions Trinity Valley Junior College.

Three players earned honors for their accomplishments during the 2014-2015 season. The team’s leading scorer, sophomore guard Kendra Howard (Dallas / Cedar Hill High School), who averaged 15.5 points per game, was named to the All-Region Team. Freshman guard Miranda LeJune (Pearland / Pearland High School), who led the nation in assists with 8.1 per game, was named to the All-Conference Team and earned the Region XIV Co-Freshman of the Year honor. Freshman forward Kaelynn Wilson (San Antonio / Wagner High School) earned All-Conference Honorable Mention recognition.

At the banquet, players, coaches, and support staff members were recognized for their dedication and achievements.
