Mystical Arts of Tibet at San Jacinto College Nov. 9-13

The San Jacinto College South Campus Lyceum Committee and PTK Alpha Gamma Zeta Chapter invite you to experience the Mystical Arts of Tibet featuring the Lamas of Drepung Loseling Monastery throughout the week of November 9 – 13.

The free weeklong event will begin on Monday, Nov. 9, with a vibrant opening ceremony featuring music and chants performed by the monks for the preparation of the mandala sand painting. Throughout the week, students, faculty, and the general public are invited to watch the monks create the sacred mandala using millions of grains of colored sand painstakingly placed on an intricate pattern. The week will also consist of lectures and sand painting activities open to the public. The culminating closing ceremony on Friday, Nov. 13, will be another visually dramatic event where the monks will sweep away the completed mandala design as a symbolic gesture of the impermanence of life. Half of the colored sands will be distributed among the audience.

All ceremonial events, mandala creation, and lectures will be held at the San Jacinto College South Campus in the Marie Spence Flickinger Fine Arts Center (Building 15) atrium and auditorium. The South Campus is located at 13735 Beamer Road in Houston. See flyer for more details.

Heather Knight visits San Jacinto College

The San Jacinto College Lyceum Committee recently hosted their annual Fall speaker event with social roboticist, Heather Knight. Knight brought along her robot Ginger, who also does comedy. Knight also showed a short film and music video featuring OK Go, which she helped work on. Students of all ages in the audience showed an interest with questions during the Q & A, especially elementary-age female students who already have a strong interest in STEM and robotics. Check out some of the photos from Heather’s live afternoon demonstration and her evening presentation below.

Lyceum Committe presents Heather Knight’s robot comedy show March 3

Carnegie Mellon doctoral candidate and social roboticist, Heather Knight, will bring her robotic comedy show to the San Jacinto College South Campus on Tuesday, March 3 at 7pm. in the Proscenium Theatre in the Marie Spence Flickinger Fine Arts Center.
