North Campus Upward Bound students and staff members did something out of the ordinary to culminate their recent summer session. The group typically visits a university campus at the end of the six-week session. This year, they pitched in to help out in a worthy cause – traveling to central Oklahoma to take part in ongoing recovery efforts from the devastating tornadoes that struck the area in May. San Jacinto College students lend helping hand for the season

A group of San Jacinto College (SJC) students from South Campus psychology professor Dr. Dawn Eaton’s child growth and development class recently volunteered their time at the Ronald McDonald House of Galveston for a community service project. The eight SJC students collected a total of $200 from fellow South Campus psychology professor Dr. Marylou Robin’s classes, helped shop for toys, wrap gifts, and cook food. The Ronald McDonald House of Galveston is a “home away from home” for the families of children who are seeking medical treatment at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Shriners Hospital for Children, and Transitional Learning Center. The House serves as an alternative to an isolated hotel room where the families and children enjoy cheerful surroundings and the support of other families, volunteers, and staff. Pictured left to right: (bottom row) Barbara Spencer, Ronald McDonald volunteer; Gloria Gonzales, Ronald McDonald volunteer; Andrea Herrera, SJC student; and Amanda Trader, SJC student. Second row: SJC students Nailah Spencer, Sharon Cole, and Cindy Hernadez. Third row: SJC students Nathaniel Barley, Cody Thomas, and Jason Box. Photo submitted.

North campus helps in a worthy cause

From left, North campus employees Myrna Gonzalez, Robbie Murphy, and Rhonda Bell were among the many employees and students who volunteered at the health fair.

A large group of North campus employees and students provided valuable volunteer help to area residents during the recent community health fair that was held at the Fellowship of the Nations church in North Shore. The annual health fair provides residents with a range of health services, with a primary goal of providing immunization shots for children before the beginning of another school year. Serving as the Volunteer Coordinator for the event was a true blessing. Of the 297 volunteers present, over 100 of the volunteers were from SJCN—this speaks for itself as to how dedicated our campus family is to our community.

North campus employees coordinate hospital visit

Kudos to North campus cosmetology instructors Simone Paisley, Gloria Young, and Tina Sanchez who coordinated a recent volunteer effort at Texas Children’s Hospital, during which cosmetology students donated beauty services to help patients dealing with serious medical issues to enjoy a very special occasion.

A group of North campus cosmetology students spent several hours on a recent Sunday to help TCH renal dialysis patients get ready for an elegant prom, an event especially created for patients who seldom have a chance to enjoy special occasions. (More …)

A large group of students, faculty, and staff from the North campus recently visited Texas Children’s Hospital to bring some cheer and good will to young patients at the hospital.

The photo at left shows North campus employees Tina Sanchez, Amy Ammerman, and Tom Cortez, who participated in the volunteer effort.

San Jac people distributed cute teddy bears to children in their rooms and provided cosmetology services to the young patients, as well as to their visiting friends and relatives. Students dressed as life-sized cartoon characters roamed the hospital walls to visit with the youngsters. Some entertained children with karaoke singing. Others spent quality time with the little patients in a recreation room, playing pool, Guitar Hero, and other video games. A group of faculty members and students hosted a live broadcast on the hospital’s closed-circuit Lolipop radio station that prompted people to dance down the hallways.
