    June Board of Trustees Meeting Highlights 

    Congratulations to the following groups and individuals recognized at the San Jacinto College Board of Trustees’ June 2018 meeting for their recent achievements:

    The Hold’Em and Hit’Em Organization was recognized by the Board and the San Jacinto College Foundation for being one of its major donors. Since 2000, the organization has given close to $225,000 in scholarships and recognized San Jacinto College students at their annual gala. The Foundation is proud to be partners with this unique, fun, hardworking and generous group, who give tirelessly to our community.

    San Jacinto College Maritime Instructor Mark Lloyd (right) was recognized by John Stauffer, San Jacinto College associate vice chancellor and superintendent of maritime (left), for recently receiving the 40 Under 40 Award in recognition of his work in training the next generation of merchant mariners. The award, designated by the Inland Marine Expo (IMX), recognizes the top 40 individuals under the age of 40 working in the inland marine industry.

    Dr. Alexander Okwonna (far right) presented the Texas Association of Black Personnel in Higher Education’s (TABPHE) recognition of San Jacinto College for Outstanding Support of its 45th annual state conference in Houston. In addition to being a TABPHE board member, Okwonna also served as the 2018 conference chair.

    Dr. Allatia Harris recognized the San Jacinto College baseball team for finishing third in the 2018 NJCAA Division 1 JUCO Wolrd Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. Baseball Head Coach Tom Arrington (left) and Assistant Coach Eric Weaver (right) were present to accept the recognition.

    2015 Year in Review 

    The year 2015 was truly amazing at San Jacinto College. Some key highlights included a record number of graduates, completion of construction on the new Maritime Training Center, and approval of a $425 million bond measure to fund new facilities and renovations.

    Congratulations to all of the students, faculty, and staff for your many achievements and accomplishments.

    At the June 1, 2015, Board of Trustees meeting, the San Jacinto College baseball team was recognized for its amazing season. The team earned its 23rd trip to the JUCO World Series. In addition, three trustees were administered the oath of office.

    October Board Meeting recognitions. 

    The Board of Trustees recognized several individuals and groups for achievements and contributions during the October 2014 meeting.

    The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recently audited San Jacinto College with positive results of “no significant findings.” Members of the team that assisted with the audit include, from left (front row): Angela Perkins, business office supervisor; Dr. Wanda Munson, dean of enrollment management and college registrar; Dr. Laurel Williamson, associate vice chancellor and president; Dr. Catherine O’Brien, associate vice chancellor for learning; and Carla Fearnley, college bursar; (back row): Van Wigginton, Central Campus provost; Kevin McKisson, Central Campus dean of enrollment services; Bill Dickerson, director of accounting and financial services; Wayne Wauters, employment director; Shanna Dement, director of compensation and human resources information services; Kathy Edwards, Banner Student System Services coordinator; Rob Stanicic, chief information officer; and Joan Rondot, associate college registrar. Team members not pictured include Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer; Joanna Zimmermann, vice president of student services; Robert Merino, dean of financial aid; and Denise Davidson, enrollment services specialist.

    North Shore Rotary supports San Jacinto College 

    NS Rotary Donation July 2014The North Shore Rotary Club Foundation recently presented $25,000 to the San Jacinto College Foundation to set up an endowed scholarship, with plans to add to the endowment in the future.     Trustee Marie Flickinger honored at public reception 

    At a recent public reception, District 11 State Senator Larry Taylor presented San Jacinto College Board of Trustees member Marie Flickinger a proclamation from the State of Texas honoring her for earning the Association of Community College Trustees 2013 M. Dale Ensign Trustee Leadership Award. A former San Jacinto College Board chair, Flickinger is also chair of the Board of the Community College Association of Texas Trustees, and chair of the Two-Year College Stakeholder Committee with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Flickinger is owner and publisher of the South Belt-Ellington Leader newspaper.

    Hyacinth Memorial honors North Campus employees who have passed away

    The North Campus recently hosted the tenth annual Hyacinth Memorial, which pays tribute to North Campus employees who have recently passed away.

    Those remembered at the ceremony include Phillip Cohen, retired International Business professor; John Johnson, retired registrar; Levi Smallwood, trustee emeritus; and Wanda Wiese, retired custodian.

    Prelude piano music was provided by music professor Guillermo Hernandez. Amy Ammerman offered the invocation, and North Campus Interim Provost Dr. Richard Bailey welcomed guests. Solo selections were sung by Shalonica Dever, and Jennifer Mowdy, with piano accompaniment provided by Ron Ollis.

    Ryan Navejar provided introductions, and eulogies were provided by Dr. Gary Friery, Joelena Eggebrecht, Dr. Bailey, and Charles Bailey.

    Guests gathered in the foyer of the fine arts building for a processional, where Dr. Randy Snyder played “Taps” on trumpet, and Sharon Himes offered a benediction in dismissal.

    The Hyacinth Memorial planning committee includes Dr. Bailey, Serita Dickey, Charlotte Jackson, Jerrel Wade, Dedra White, and LaVena Wilder.
