College hosts regional conference for bursars

Carla Fearnley, who serves as the College’s bursar, recently hosted the Houston Area Regional Texas BUC$ (Texas Bursars for Universities and Colleges) conference, which was held at the Central campus.

It was the first time for San Jacinto College to host a regional BUC$ conference. Texas BUC$ is a professional organization for student business office administrators and employees at the public, community and private sector levels. Their regional meetings and annual conference provide opportunities to network with colleagues and to visit with exhibitors to discover new approaches and solutions to issues common to student business services. Each spring, Texas BUC$ holds regional conferences to serve local communities.

“At the conference, we discussed third party billings, three-peat charges, TouchNet, Banner, processing student payments, customer service, employee recognition and morale, Veterans Assistance/Chapter 33 procedures, past due collections processes, and general business office best practices,” Fearnley said. “I have attended several BUC$ regional seminars and yearly conferences and I volunteered to host this year’s Houston area event.”

Fearnley began working for the College in September 2001 as an office assistant in the registrar’s office on South campus. A year later, she transferred to the North campus business office as the supervisor, and in October 2006 she became the bursar. As the bursar, Fearnley is responsible for the daily operations of the business offices of the three campuses, ensuring that policies and procedures are being followed, creating and updating policies and procedures as applicable and making sure we are adhering to the college values and portraying the one college concept.
