    Blackboard Maintenance – January 7-9, 2018 

    The San Jacinto College Blackboard system will be unavailable during the period of January 7, 2017 at 12:01am through January 9, 2017 at 11:59 pm for system maintenance, as scheduled in the Academic Calendar. During this maintenance window the following actions will be taken:

    1. Upgrade Blackboard operating system. This upgrade will affect back end processes used for system administration and will not change Blackboard functionality for users.
    2. Enable the New Box View (replacement for Croc-o-Doc).  For more information about New Box click here.

    Additional details will be announced as they become available.

    STEPS YOU SHOULD TAKE PRIOR TO JANUARY 7, 2017

    • Faculty should take time to archive copies for each of your courses. This process will create a permanent record of the course, including all content and user interactions. Archived copies of courses should be kept in a secure location like your SJC H:\ drive folder. You may find this End of Semester Checklist handy for details on archiving your course(s).

    Dr. Dabney to serve on state professional development committee

    Dr. Valschkia Dabney

    Dr. Valschkia Dabney, San Jacinto College’s director of training and professional development, has been selected to serve on the Texas Community College Teachers Association (TCCTA) professional development committee.

    In her role, she will help to plan and facilitate professional development conferences for community college administrators, faculty and staff who are TCCTA members. The professional development committee will also work closely with the TCCTA executive committee to conduct research to support opportunities that elevate the status of two-year and technical college educators.

    “I am excited about working with the TCCTA to leverage its existing strengths toward an even brighter future for community colleges,” commented Dabney, who works in San Jacinto College’s educational technology department. “I look forward to working with fellow committee members to bring quality, timely and useful professional development opportunities to administrators, faculty, and staff.”

    Dabney earned an associate degree in social science from San Jacinto College. She holds a master’s in business administration from the University of Phoenix-Houston Northwest Campus, and a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Texas.

    Before coming to San Jacinto College, Dabney taught English, business technology, and developmental writing at Lone Star College. She also taught English, math, and science at Klein ISD. In the field of college educational technology, she has served on numerous committees and boards to improve academic and workforce education programs for two-year college students. She has also served key roles in securing grants to help fund important college preparatory programs.

    The Spark Learning Portal is coming soon!

    San Jacinto College has a new Learning Management System (LMS). Remember the old system, SJCD Avatar? That is being replaced by the SJCD Spark Learning Portal, which is Success Factors’ Learning Management System (LMS). You may recognize the Success Factors name… it is the same product that the College uses for performance management, and the industry’s most highly acclaimed LMS.

    The EdTech Training and Professional Development Department is partnering with the Human Resources Office and the IT-Enterprise Applications Department, to design the new system and develop the content for training San Jacinto College employees. Currently, the site is in the system integration and testing phase and is expected to “Go Live” in July 2013. Please note there will be a four to five day period in June 2013 when Avatar will be unavailable, while the switch is made to the SJCD Spark Learning Portal.

     

    What you need to know

    The SJCD Spark Learning Portal is an online resource for training and educational opportunities for all San Jacinto College employees. Spark is web-based, so you can login from wherever, whenever. You will use the same login for SJCD Spark Learning Portal that you currently use for Success Factors (firstname.lastname). You will also be able to search the online course catalog, register for a course, and track your training and professional development activities within in one system.

    You will also have direct access to more than 1,000 on-demand resources including courses, books, videos and more that are available through Skillsoft via the SJCD Spark Learning Portal. The single sign-on method for Spark and Skillsoft will also help to simplify the process and keep all learning and training information in one place. What’s great about the new process is your learning history will be stored in Spark and your training and professional development activities will also be tied to your performance management profile in Success Factors.
