April Board of Trustees Meeting Highlights

At the April Board of Trustees meeting, the trustees recognized and celebrated the accomplishments of the women’s basketball team and the the financial aid department. The women’s basketball team advanced to its second-consecutive National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament, had the most wins in a single season in school history, had four student-athletes earn post-season honors, Head Coach Kayla Weaver was named the District L coach of the year, and the team received the NJCAA Alberta Lee Cox Sportsmanship Award.

In addition, the Board of Trustees recognized the financial aid team for earning the Monument Award. The team was presented with the challenge of helping to reduce the cohort default rate, which is used by the US Department of Education to measure the effectiveness of managing the federal student loan program. The San Jacinto College financial aid employees led to a decrease in the student loan cohort default rate from 17.3% to 9.1% (almost half!) by providing direct and personal communication to students when they leave the College; through extra loan advising in addition to the federally required counseling; and financial literacy presentations in classrooms and financial literacy workshops each semester.

Congratulations to both the San Jacinto College women’s basketball team and the financial aid team on your well deserved recognitions!

Women’s basketball team culminates amazing season with awards banquet

The College’s women’s basketball team recently culminated one of the best seasons in the program’s history with an appreciation and awards banquet.

In an amazing turnaround season, the team went from 3-27 last year to 23-9 this season. Head Coach Brenita Jackson was named the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XIV Coach of the Year. The team was ranked nationally for much of the season appearing as high as ninth in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball poll in early January. It was the first time in the program’s history to be ranked in the top 10 nationally.

The team qualified for the regional tournament for the first time since 2011, advancing to the semifinal round before being eliminated by the defending national champions Trinity Valley Junior College.

Three players earned honors for their accomplishments during the 2014-2015 season. The team’s leading scorer, sophomore guard Kendra Howard (Dallas / Cedar Hill High School), who averaged 15.5 points per game, was named to the All-Region Team. Freshman guard Miranda LeJune (Pearland / Pearland High School), who led the nation in assists with 8.1 per game, was named to the All-Conference Team and earned the Region XIV Co-Freshman of the Year honor. Freshman forward Kaelynn Wilson (San Antonio / Wagner High School) earned All-Conference Honorable Mention recognition.

At the banquet, players, coaches, and support staff members were recognized for their dedication and achievements.

    North Campus hosts Fall Fest

The North Campus recently hosted a Fall Fest at Channelview High School that turned out to be a great success, attracting hundreds of Channelview students of all ages, as well as many parents and little children.

Employees representing most North Campus academic and technical programs were on hand to greet visitors and hand out information about their programs. Players from the baseball team and the women’s basketball team mingled with visitors, and cosmetology students provided free face painting.

The music department provided live jazz music, the culinary arts program provided free hot dogs, and the mental health program coordinated a free cakewalk. Other highlights included a rock climbing wall, a photo booth, psychology analysis demonstrations, music, group dancing, popcorn, cotton candy, and robotics demonstrations.

Kudos to coordinators of the Fall Fest, including Clare Iannelli, Keisha Smoke, Chris Evans, Erin Lewis, Deborah Longtine, Andrea Mitchen, Dinorah Ramos, Rob Vanya, Christine Torres, Josh Johnson, Shawn Silman, Dr. Gary Friery, Serita Dickey, Jerrel Wade, Pam Campbell, Jennifer Mowdy, Dr. Bill Raffetto, Charlotte Jackson, Ludith Gonzalez, David Gardner, Alfredo Gomez, Louis Dorsey, Diana Zapata, Amy Ammerman, Jo Eggebrecht, Sergio Garcia, Nichole Fearnley, Deanna Clark, Patricia Rice, Mark Escobedo, Dana Kostecka, Mary Cherry, Rita Harris, Brenita Williams-Jackson, and Tom Arrington.
