Softball team surpasses expectations

Coach Kelly Saenz, far right, is proud of the softball team for their outstanding effort at the Region XIV tournament.

Congratulations to head Coach Kelly Saenz, assistant coaches Dionna Lopez and James Perry, and athletic trainer Troy Rabon for guiding the South campus women’s softball team through another successful season.

The team surpassed expectations and advanced to the final round, ending its season with a third-place finish at the Region XIV tournament, played May 5-9 at Angelina College in Lufkin.

San Jac’s third-place finish at the regional tournament was much better than had been anticipated. SJC was the last team to qualify for the event, filling out the tournament bracket as the at-large team with the fewest wins in the regular season.

San Jac’s head Coach Kelly Saenz was proud of the team’s gutsy effort throughout the tournament. “Our players have nothing to be ashamed of, because we barely qualified to get in, and we were not supposed to go this far,” she commented. “The only team we lost to was Navarro, the top team in this region, and the number five team in the nation. These ladies left it all on the field, and as a coach that’s all I can ask for. I am so proud of them.”
