The San Jacinto College (SJC) baseball team finished the 2012 season as the national runner-up, after a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to Iowa Western Community College late Saturday night at the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series at Suplizio Field in Grand Junction, Colo.

San Jac (41-25) took the lead early with a run in the first, but Iowa Western responded with two runs in the top of the second. Sophomore Jared Fancher hit a homerun in the bottom of the second, and San Jac scored another run in the third to take a 3-2 lead. Iowa Western scored runs in the fifth and sixth for the 4-3 lead. Redshirt freshman Kirby Taylor hit a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 lead. However, it all came down to the ninth inning, when Iowa Western tied the game at 5 apiece off a single, and then took the go-ahead, and game winning run, off a balk.

San Jac went 4-2 in the national tournament, defeating Iowa Western in the opening round, and following that with a win over Neosho County, a loss to Gordon College, two straight wins over Shelton State Community College, Gordon College, and the loss to Iowa Western. It is the eighth national runner-up for San Jac in school history, and the fifth-straight 40-win season for San Jac.

Sophomores Daniel Stumpf (pitcher), Justin Byrd (outfield), and Kyle Bacak (catcher) were named to the All-Tournament team. Stumpf also earned the most outstanding pitcher award, and Bacak was named the defensive player of the tournament.
