Dr. Sarah Janes was recently named vice president of the College’s Continuing and Professional Development division. Before the move she served as the academic dean of the North campus.

Dr. Janes, known affectionately as “Sallie Kay” by friends and cohorts, is a highly regarded educator and has served as a dedicated and respected San Jacinto College employee for many years. She has spent 40 years in education, 18 years teaching math at various grade levels in public schools in Louisiana, Germany, Lubbock, and Houston. For the next 20 years she served at San Jacinto College, teaching math at both the developmental and academic transfer levels. She also coordinated the University Connection program and the HomeGrown Teacher project.  For the past six years she has served in an administrative capacity, first as dean of instruction, then as academic dean at the North campus. Dr. Janes has written and directed grants for Teacher Quality, National Science Foundation, United Negro College Fund Special programs, and NASA.

Sallie Kay believes in partnerships, collaborations and always learning. She also teaches a graduate course periodically for the University of St. Thomas for San Jacinto College faculty on Addressing Diversity in the Classroom.

Besides facilitating learning, Sallie Kay’s passion is for NASA and the aerospace community. Her dream to be an astronaut came true when she was able to fly on the Zero-Gravity plane for the NASA Microgravity University in January, 2009.
