Banned Books Week is upon us! A note from Richard McKay

Banned Books Week is not marked with a dayglo highlighter on my desk calendar. I don’t have “can’t miss this one!” in block letters and red ink in the Sunday, September 27th, square, with an arrow drawn straight through to midnight on Saturday, October 3rd.  I will not practice any mortifications of the flesh besides those to which I am already accustomed.  I couldn’t keep the holiday with any conviction because there are books that I’d like to see banned. Condolences

Our deepest sympathies go to Dr. Janis Fowler, on the recent passing of her mother, Patricia Christensen.

Patricia Ann McCarty Christensen was born on July 23, 1933 and passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2015 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Pat will be best remembered for her love of family, her generosity, her devout faith, and many close friends. She never hesitated to help others in need. Pat loved to celebrate the holidays with family – these usually included home cooked meals and many rounds of card or board games with her grandchildren. Other hobbies of Pat’s included antiquing, sewing, decorating, shopping, and working Sudoku and crossword puzzles. But most importantly, she was the glue that brought and kept the family together.

Pat was preceded in death by her loving husband Richard (Dick) Christensen, parents Esther and Jerry McCarty, brothers Gerald McCarty and Tom Ellsberry and wives, in-laws Elroy and Geneal Christensen and brother-in law Paul Christensen. Pat is survived by her children, Jerry Christensen (Carol), Janis Christensen Fowler (Ned), and David Christensen (Mary); grandchildren Robert, Hannah, Harrison, Libby, and Emalee; sisters Donna Adams and Margie McDermott; in-laws Bruce and Pat Christensen, and Delores Christensen, as well as many cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Kingwood Funeral Home in Kingwood, Texas.
Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2015 at Holy Comforter Church in Kingwood, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Pat’s name to Holy Comforter Lutheran Church or to the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.

Recycling at San Jacinto College is serious business!

A message from John Maslonka –

Recycling at San Jacinto College is serious business!

You might have noticed the blue recycle containers distributed by our campus Green Teams throughout the district. Containers for paper and bottles & cans are available for your use. Please use them for recyclables only. If we send contents contaminated by non-recyclable material we can be financially penalized. Use them and ensure that you do your part to minimize the impact to our environment.

These recycle materials are gathered by select members of our custodial contractor group, who in turn place them in our recycle compactors located at each of the main campus locations. Once these compactors are full, we have our recycle company collect them for processing. We partner with Republic Services recycling aluminum cans, metals, paper, cardboard, glass, and plastic bottles. Doing so reduces the impact on our area landfills and provides a resource for new products that we use every day. Last year, the Green Team helped us recycle 57 tons of recyclable materials!

The College participates in other avenues of recycling. Accounting and Financial Services semi-annual shredding drives have a positive impact on our efforts at environmental responsibility. Approximately 10 tons of paper was collected last shredding cycle. This number has been trending downward, possibly due to more electronic data collection efforts. Our Welding department at Central Campus recycles scrap metals. Last year they sent 21 tons of metals for recycle. Not to be out done, our district’s Inventory & Procurement Management and Technical Support groups recycle computer and electrical equipment. Last year they were able to recycle almost 32 tons of computers and equipment. Do you have a recycling project underway? Share it with us by emailing john.maslonka@sjcd.edu.

You can see that students, faculty, staff, and our contracted partners are making a real difference. San Jacinto College’s focus is not only on the future of our students, but the future of our environment as well!

Are used pens, etc. still being collected for recycling. If so where do we deposit these items.
