    Harris County Commissioners Court recognized September as National Preparedness Month (NPM) and the Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) encourages residents to take time to make sure that their families, neighborhoods, and communities are prepared for disasters and emergencies of all types.     It’s that time again! Submit your STEM events! 

    Did you know that San Jacinto College hosted or assisted in the coordination of approximately 60 STEM-related events last year? To everyone who submitted STEM events to the STEM Council page, thank you!

    Let’s do this again for Fall 2015. Just visit the STEM Council page and click EVENT FORM to submit your event.

    In the meantime, please let your students know to visit the STEM Council page for information about STEM scholarships, internships, events, and organizations.

    The Professional Development Travel Application is on the Exchange 

    The Professional Development Travel application is now on the Exchange.  To get to the Exchange go to http://internal.sanjac.edu.  To find the application, follow the steps below.

    Select the College Resources tab at the top, select Forms/Documents, select Travel Forms/Professional Development, select Travel Application.

    Save the travel application to your computer before you begin filling in the information.  If you experienced difficulty with the font size on the application that was released earlier this week, please use the one that is on the Exchange.  It is also attached here for your convenience.

    Houston History Conference to feature Weller, Hutchison 

    HHA Digital Flyer.jpgThe next Houston History Conference, “On the Cusp of War: Houston in the 1860s” will be held at the University of Houston and feature San Jacinto College’s Eddie Weller, Ph.D., and history instructor Brady Hutchison. The conference is set for Saturday, Sept. 12 and we hope you are invited!

    The cost of the conference is $50 per person before Sept. 11; $40 for seniors, for those presenting in the breakout sessions, and for representatives of exhibiting organizations; $25 for teachers not covered by scholarships from their respected school systems; and $20 for students (free to students who do not want lunch).

    Highlights of the conference include:

    • Exhibits from more than 20 local history, preservation and neighborhood organizations
    • Plenary presentations with 25+ speakers from all over Texas, including two San Jacinto College faculty members
    • More than 14 afternoon breakout sessions that cover all time periods in our city’s rich history

    San Jac on TV! 

    Last week, several San Jacinto College students, faculty, and staff made the rounds at Houston television stations, talking about San Jacinto College and the Acceleration in Mathematics (AIM) program. A special shout out and THANK YOU to Kristen Foxley, JP Anderson, Alfredo Gomez, Julia Garcia, and Victor Rodriguez. You are encouraged to attend, as this is an opportunity for you to get to know the community and services that are available to community members.     Condolences 

    Our deepest sympathies go to Olga Nava on the recent passing of her uncle, Joe Roy Nava.

    Mr. Nava was born on February 5, 1940 in Elmer City, Oklahoma, and passed away on Monday, August 17, 2015 in Houston, Texas.

    Mr. Nava worked as a groundskeeper at the San Jacinto College North campus beginning in 1987 until his retirement in May 2005.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Rosendo and Martha Nava, his siblings, Fermin, Rosendo, Gabino, Jesus, and Aurora. Mr. Nava is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ysidra Nava, his children, Fred, Maurico, Victor, Alicia, and Sheila and many other family members.

    Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Both services will be held at The Compean Funeral Home Main Chapel in Houston, Texas.

    August Board of Trustees meeting highlights 

    At the August 2015 Board of Trustees meeting, the Board recognized and thanked the Bayshore Medical Center Volunteer Auxiliary for their continued support of San Jacinto College health science students. The group donates proceeds collected from the hospital’s gift shop to the San Jacinto College Foundation to be used toward student scholarships. At the meeting, the group presented the Foundation a check for $50,000 for scholarships.
