    Heather Knight visits San Jacinto College 

    The San Jacinto College Lyceum Committee recently hosted their annual Fall speaker event with social roboticist, Heather Knight. Knight brought along her robot Ginger, who also does comedy. Knight also showed a short film and music video featuring OK Go, which she helped work on. Students of all ages in the audience showed an interest with questions during the Q & A, especially elementary-age female students who already have a strong interest in STEM and robotics.     NY Times features San Jacinto College in article 

    NY Times reporter Patti Cohen recently visited San Jacinto College for an article about the resurgence and demand for welders. Central Campus dean of business and technology, Jeff Parks, greeted Ms. Cohen and gave her a tour of our facilities before she visited the 10 p.m. – 2 a.m., welding class.     Speech classes visit Rice University 

    Last month, the San Jacinto College South Campus Speech 1315 Public Speaking Honor’s students attended the Rice University President’s Lecture featuring Dr. Martha C. Nussbaum, world renowned philosopher and ethicist as well as Law Professor at the University of Chicago.  Dr. Nussbaum presented a lecture entitled: “Anger and Revolutionary Justice.” Nussbaum began her lecture with the Greek story of Athena and the Furies and concluded her lecture with the concept of transformational justice in which she gave examples from Martin Luther King Jr. and his “I have a dream speech,” Mahatma Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela.     Cultural Extravaganza Talent Show wraps up Black History Month at South Campus 

    The Cultural Extravaganza Talent Show, coordinated by San Jacinto College Shared Educational Planner Alexis Alexander, was the culminating event at the South Campus to wrap up the month-long Black History Month celebration. Local performance artists, students, and community members showed off their musical, dance, spoken word, and entertainment talents for the audience. Local vendors and student organizations also supported the event displaying their services at the event. Below are some photos of the evening’s performers.

    Women in STEM luncheon 

    To kick off Women’s History Month, Women of Integrity (WOI) sponsored a Women in STEM luncheon at the South Campus on March 2. South Campus WOI mentors consisting of faculty and staff, along with other female faculty and staff attended the luncheon and mingled with students who had questions on majoring in STEM areas and STEM field careers. The next South Campus Women’s History Month event, sponsored by the Council for Diversity and Inclusivity, takes place on March 25 with a reception in the Marie Spence Flickinger Fine Arts atrium celebrating Women in Fine Arts.

    Chinese New Year at South Campus 

    The San Jacinto College South Campus office of student life and professor Zhiqun Song’s Mandarin level one and two classes recently hosted a Chinese New Year Celebration. Along with different activities including traditional Chinese paper cutting, martial arts demonstrations, singing, folk dancing, and traditional Chinese calligraphy artwork, students also presented facts about the benefits of learning and being fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
