    Safety Reminder: October is Fire Prevention Month 

     

    Did you know that Fire Prevention Week was first established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire?  The tragic 1871 conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres.

    October Board Meeting recognitions. 

    The Board of Trustees recognized several individuals and groups for achievements and contributions during the October 2014 meeting.

    The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recently audited San Jacinto College with positive results of “no significant findings.” Members of the team that assisted with the audit include, from left (front row): Angela Perkins, business office supervisor; Dr. Wanda Munson, dean of enrollment management and college registrar; Dr. Laurel Williamson, associate vice chancellor and president; Dr. Catherine O’Brien, associate vice chancellor for learning; and Carla Fearnley, college bursar; (back row): Van Wigginton, Central Campus provost; Kevin McKisson, Central Campus dean of enrollment services; Bill Dickerson, director of accounting and financial services; Wayne Wauters, employment director; Shanna Dement, director of compensation and human resources information services; Kathy Edwards, Banner Student System Services coordinator; Rob Stanicic, chief information officer; and Joan Rondot, associate college registrar. Team members not pictured include Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer; Joanna Zimmermann, vice president of student services; Robert Merino, dean of financial aid; and Denise Davidson, enrollment services specialist.

    Condolences 

    Our deepest sympathies go to the family and friends of Dr. Joseph J. Granata, who passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2014.

    Dr. Granata was a proud alumnus of UT Austin and was multi-lingual, fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, and French. During his thirty-four years as a faculty member at south campus, Dr. Granata taught a variety of classes including, history, geology, and biology. Dr. Granata served as the department chair of Natural Sciences for many years and received the Minnie Stevens Piper Professor award in 1985. His dedication to students will never be forgotten.

    Dr. Granata is survived by his partner of thirty-two years, David Waters, as well as many friends and colleagues. A private memorial will be held at a later date.

    In lieu of flowers or other offerings, please make donations to the animal rescue group he was associated with, AURORAS in Santa Fe, Texas.

    Coordinating a Service-learning event or activity? 

    The Service-learning Committee at San Jacinto College wants to know about all of the internships, volunteer, co-curricular, and service-learning events and activities being planned around the College!

    Coming up this month:

    MADD Horrors of crash at South Campus, October 21, 2014.  MADD will roll in with 5-6 wrecked vehicles, the families of those lost in the vehicles; DPS and HPD with the BATT mobile; and many activities designed to raise awareness of drinking and driving.  Supporting activities include a Gore makeup class on October 8, 2014 to teach participants how to apply injury makeup.  These skills will be used for the MADD event to create realistic drunk driving scenarios.  The South Campus acting club will be acting out these losses during the event.

    Facilities Organization Completes Realignment
