    The Spark Learning Portal is coming soon!

    San Jacinto College has a new Learning Management System (LMS). Remember the old system, SJCD Avatar? That is being replaced by the SJCD Spark Learning Portal, which is Success Factors’ Learning Management System (LMS). You may recognize the Success Factors name… it is the same product that the College uses for performance management, and the industry’s most highly acclaimed LMS.

    The EdTech Training and Professional Development Department is partnering with the Human Resources Office and the IT-Enterprise Applications Department, to design the new system and develop the content for training San Jacinto College employees. Currently, the site is in the system integration and testing phase and is expected to “Go Live” in July 2013. Please note there will be a four to five day period in June 2013 when Avatar will be unavailable, while the switch is made to the SJCD Spark Learning Portal.

     

    What you need to know

    The SJCD Spark Learning Portal is an online resource for training and educational opportunities for all San Jacinto College employees. Spark is web-based, so you can login from wherever, whenever. You will use the same login for SJCD Spark Learning Portal that you currently use for Success Factors (firstname.lastname). You will also be able to search the online course catalog, register for a course, and track your training and professional development activities within in one system.

    You will also have direct access to more than 1,000 on-demand resources including courses, books, videos and more that are available through Skillsoft via the SJCD Spark Learning Portal. The single sign-on method for Spark and Skillsoft will also help to simplify the process and keep all learning and training information in one place. What’s great about the new process is your learning history will be stored in Spark and your training and professional development activities will also be tied to your performance management profile in Success Factors.

    Facebook Live Chat 

    What is a Facebook Live Chat?
    Facebook Live Chats are live discussions conducted on the San Jacinto College main Facebook page.

    How does it work?
    Scylla Lopez schedules two Facebook Live Chats each month, with the chat usually starting around 11 a.m.   Scylla can meet with you at your office, or you could meet her at the Marketing Office.  The chat lasts an hour long.
    We would initiate the chat by asking students what questions they have about the topic.  From there, we respond to each question as they are posted.  We would also share information on that particular topic.  For example, if the topic was Financial Aid, we would post a link on how to apply for financial aid.
    This is a great way for our students to learn more about the College and our services.

    Scheduling a Live Chat
    As mentioned above, Scylla Lopez schedules two chats each month.  Scylla is always looking to schedule chats.  There is actually a spot available for May.

    Reminder: AAWCC End of Year Meeting 

    AAWCC logoThis is a reminder about the AAWCC end of the year meeting next Wednesday, May 22 at Johnny Tamale’s. If you have not already RSVP’d, please do so.     Please join us for our AAWCC end of the year meeting, May 22, at Johnny Tamale’s.

    The cost is $17 per person, this includes food, drink and tip. We will be ordering the dinner platter which consist of shrimp, ribs, chicken and beef fajitas, rice, beans, tortillas and cold plate (guacamole, sour cream, etc..) Please make checks payable to AAWCC – San Jac Chapter.  Networking will begin at 5:15 p.m., and dinner is at 5:45 p.m. The keynote speaker is San Jacinto College alumnae, Cheryl Johnson, Galveston County Tax Assessor / Collector.     EMT program in the national spotlight

    Innovative student training by the College’s EMT program is featured in two national magazines – “Emergency Management” and “EMS World.”

    Kudos to EMT instructors Cindy Barbee, Ali Shah, and Michelle Rosales for coordinating the challenging and unique training exercises.

    Also, kudos to Scylla Lopez, social media coordinator, for dodging paintballs (and getting hit a few times) while taking video footage of the training exercises. To see the video clip, scroll to the bottom of the post in the “Emergency Management” magazine.

    We will be sharing some social media news and tips every week.  This is a great way to utilize some of the knowledge we receive through online articles and blogs.  If you ever have any questions or concerns about social media, please feel free to email or call Scylla Lopez.

    Social Media Tip #1

    Ask questions!  In the post below, we received over 40 comments.  This was a simple question.  Questions can easily spark discussion, but you will need to be careful about what you ask.  You don’t want to ask something that is too controversial, because we all know how those threads could go.  Asking questions encourages interaction.  You want your “Likers” to interact with your post as much as possible.  Also, some of the feedback you get from the questions could be used as a great discussion in the classroom.

    North Campus recognizes ESOL students 

    ESOL Completers 5-13

    Kudos to Dr. Ra Shaunda Sterling, Maria Williams, and Lisa Smith for coordinating a recent ceremony to recognize students who completed the North Campus ESOL coursework, including Uyen Hoang, Giovanna Randazzo, Brenda Giron, and Titilayo Moyosore.

    At the ceremony, faculty and staff members gave presentations to ESOL students (completers and others) about various academic and technical programs, as well as student services available at the College.

    The presenters included Alfredo Gomez, Sergio Garcia, Dinorah Ramos, Sean Perrodin, Diana Johnson, and Caresal Bolds.

    Condolences 

    Our deepest condolences to Jeannie Peng-Armao on the recent passing of her grandfather, Chou Tien Peng.

    Chou Tien Peng, 93, of Roosevelt Island, passed away on Friday, May 3. Mr. Peng was the founder of the New York Hunan Association and contributor to numerous Chinese American charitable foundations. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Peng, and his four children, Belle Peng Ku, Jackson Peng, Julie Peng Wang, and Ivan Peng. He is predeceased by his daughter, Chu hua (Rebecca) Peng. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services for his funeral will be held at Chun Fook Funeral Services, located at 134-35 Northern Blvd. in Flushing, Queens. A service and viewing will take place from 5-7p.m. on Friday, May 10, followed by a burial service at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 11.

    Jeannie is a Senior Communications Coordinator in the Marketing, Public Relations, and Government Affairs office.

    Condolences 

    It is with great sadness to announce the passing of our friend and colleague, William “Bill” Downs.

    Mr. Downs passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at his home in Channelview, Texas. He worked at the Central Campus as a painter in the maintenance department.

    The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Grand View Funeral Home in Pasadena. Services will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. in The Chapel of Grandview Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Grand View Memorial Park.
