SJC begins celebrations for its 50th anniversary

Dear San Jacinto College students and employees,

Welcome back to another semester! We hope you had a great summer. As you may know, we are embarking on our 50th anniversary here at San Jacinto College. The anniversary celebration officially kicks off Sept. 19, with a special Board of Trustees meeting to commemorate the first day of classes at San Jacinto College on Sept. 18, 1961.

Beginning next week, we will take a look back at our history through the decades. Over the next several months, we will highlight a decade and you will have a chance to show your knowledge of the College. There will be a trivia quiz for each decade that is open to all employees and students. The quiz will be available on the 50th Anniversary website for one month and the winner will be announced the following month. All correct entries will be entered into a drawing to select the winner. Winners will receive a San Jacinto College 50th Anniversary T-shirt.

    Here’s the schedule:

    60s Contest Open 9/1/2011 – 9/30/2011

Winner selected on or before 10/15/2011

    70s Contest Open 11/1/2011 – 11/30/2011

Winner selected on or before 12/5/2011

    80s Contest Open 1/2/2012 – 1/31/2012

Winner selected on or before 2/15/2012

    90s Contest Open 3/1/2012 – 3/31/2012

Winner selected on or before 4/15/2012

    2000s Contest Open 5/1/2012 – 5/31/2012

Winner selected on or before 6/5/2012

The next big event you should know about will be a human “50” photo. We need you and 599 of your colleagues and classmates to help us take this photo. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 4 p.m., at the Central campus track. Parking will be available on the East side of the campus near the truck driving school driving course. When you arrive at the track, you will be greeted by a volunteer who will line you up and take you to the appropriate location in either the five or the zero. Once everyone is lined up, we’ll take the photo from above.

You are encouraged to wear San Jacinto College apparel, although it’s not a requirement to be in the photo. Students, if you have a uniform, you are encouraged to wear that (ex: athletics, cosmetology, culinary, automotive tech, nursing and health science, etc.).

We are looking for 15 employee volunteers from each campus to help us line everyone up. You will also be able to be in the photo. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact Hollie Fulsom.

We hope that you’ll get involved in the 50th anniversary activities. Please plan to join us at the Central campus track on Oct. 4 for the commemorative photo event. To find out what else is happening with the College’s 50th anniversary, visit the 50th anniversary website.

Thank you and have a great semester!
